We suffer consequences of sin, but are not punished for them.
The punishment for sin by God is death. The fact that we’re still alive here on earth demonstrates that He is not punishing us for them, even if He allows us to bear the consequences for our sin.
There is no Scriptural justification for the doctrine of purgatory and rationalizing its existence doesn’t prove its existence either.
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
God isn’t going to beat His bride black and blue to pay for sins that He has forgiven her of.
Give me one verse in Scripture that uses the word punishment in regards to death. There are many in the OT which speak to punishment for iniquity, all temporal and not eternal. Are you saying that we do not suffer from the consequences of our sinfulness here in this life? Would that suffering be a form of punishment?
But, Scripture does say that the WAGES of sin is death. Death is what sin costs us. And Jesus has paid that debt, once for all. That doesn’t mean that I then can then sin with impunity. I must be ever mindful that I am a sinner and will sin even without knowing of it.
So, I pray that God will make my sins known to me so that I may ask His forgiveness for them. For each and every one of them.
