Second, I’d suggest that “ecumenical” might have been a better RF tag for the thread.
Third ... I’m not sure I want to go there ...
Funding for his salary came from the Institute of Catholic Thought.
Which begs the question why are state universities teaching religion if the tenets of the faith are considered to be "hate speech"? Of course, it could just be some student who seriously needs to grow up.
If UI didn’t truly want an instructor of Catholic Studies, there are a myriad of other things they could have done. Like not have Catholic Studies in their curriculum. The university has violated academic freedom here. And it’s fairly obvious that Mr. Howell’s legal representatives should sue.
Outside of the engineering school, yes. Come to think of it, that's hit and miss considering the U of I engineers I know. Great engineers. Other thinking, not so much.

Like not have Catholic Studies in their curriculum ...There is a substantial Catholic presence at UIllinois through the Newman Center (they even held outside Reconciliation recently with several priests offering and a huge banner of Jesus situated in the center) for the students. That is what makes this story even more surprising to me. He was a well-liked professor, a convert to the Catholic faith.
I was just accomodating metmom who suggested it could go on News also, for more discussion and exposure. I didn’t realize I should ping you or ask you about it.
I meant no disrespect, just wanted more people to see this. Often people just don’t check Religion Caucus articles. I figure it won’t hurt anything if it’s posted twice.
Is metmom Catholic?
Fear of lawsuits, maybe, or fear of moslems.
