I am pretty sure you mentioned you were LDS. But since the subject has come up? Are you LDS? What church do you attend?

Since Vigilanteman has frequented Lds threads for a while now, I can say, he has not claimed to be Lds.

What Vigilanteman did say on a thread a while back is that some nice Lds members--even missionaries if I recall correctly--came and helped him in his garden.

That "testimony in action" has stayed on with him, which is an understandable emotion. Apparently ever since, he has the felt gut-level emotion of needing to defend Lds teachings. Very generally, of course, but defend them, nonetheless.

What we do find on FR is that most non-Lds FReepers who stick around to defend Mormons do so, knowing very little about Mormon teachings. Therefore, the way they often defend is to go on the offensive -- to "attack" in going after posters personally.

They have no doctrinal dogs in the hunt.
No teachings to defend.
No pet doctrines.

Well, I take that back...slightly. For some, perhaps at least one "pet doctrine" is nursed...(not necessarily descriptive of Vigilanteman...expanding here...but certainly many others I've noticed thru the years).

And the pet teaching they seem to nurse?
(drum roll, please) Stated simply, it's anti-dogmatism. They hate dogmatism, pure and simple. (Dogma just means "teaching"; but dogmatism is stating a teaching in absolute terms).

If I had to "profile" a few of these posters, I would say: They grew up in an era where pluralism was taught to them in school. For some, as they headed into college or the workplace, diversity training and "tolerance" teachings bombarded them. "Tolerance" in fact, replaced the old pluralistic teachings.

Instead of just recognizing pluralism, tolerance-ism demands you accept all perspectives, all religious vantage points, all worldviews as equally "true." And if you don't hold this view, why, you're a heretic! Why, you've "sinned" vs. the creed of tolerance!

And what's the only thing that's worse than that? Why, it's to actually come across as authoritative and dogmatic in your statements. Why, that just irks some to no end. You've "erred" in their eyes by claiming some sort of "exclusivity" or absolute teaching -- when, doncha know, all creeds were created equal!!!

Now, this by no mean explains all of such non-Lds Mormon allies on these threads. For example, some want a united conservative front and feels even having a religious section divides conservatives. (The problem with this viewpoint is they have to either deliberately ignore what Mormons have said about Christians for 180 years, or they just don't care about what they've said...No matter, their admonishments always seem to be one-directional -- toward Christians...never toward the 180-year Mormon history).

And then, perhaps for a few others, another possible factor entering the picture is they simply have personalities that cater to the perceived "underdog." They themselves may have minority religious viewpoints. They didn't like it when at some past point, they felt "ganged up" upon. Hence, if they perceive a "gang up" they rush into defend.

And since Christianity is the dominant faith in our culture, anybody constantly raising their head above a Christian-marked trench is a fair target.

What these posters seemingly haven't considered is that we're talking about a few FREEPER posters vs. LDS, Inc.
Lds Inc. already owns 1% of the state of Florida.
LDS Inc. owns $billions.
LDS Inc. sends out 52,000 missionaries.
LDS Inc. spreads more slander about the Christian church in a day via its online presence, BYU-TV, curricula, magazines, multi-media sites & venues, Mormon "scriptures" translated into hundreds of languages -- than the Flying Inmans could cover in years on FR talking about the whole of Mormonism!

LDS Inc. an underdog? (My foot!)

Black suits, dark ties, always white shirts. Is is a requirement? How far can you vary without drawing Bishopric attention?

Hm, men in black...

Zed: Edwards. Let's put it on.

Edwards: Put what on?

Zed: The last suit you'll ever need.

...maybe Mormons are aliens?

I will pop in once in a while to spread the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

ah, I see you glommed on to my phrase "the good news".

What again is the good news Saundra? That I will be going to the heaven for blacks, apostates and servants where I will never see Jesus?

after all, it's too late for me to better my fate even if I become a mormon. I'm too old to have children. I'm just a woman. I have no husband who will call my name releasing me from spirit prison.

Only $139.99 per Bottle.

I have blessed this fine grape juice from afar. If the wine doesn't cure you, the price will kill you.

If you copied me in insinuating I’m an “attacker” because I’m not familar w/Mormon teachings you’d be wrong. Matter of fact I’m familiar enough with both Mormonism and Christianity to know that I choose neither and that sincere people can make it through the day with either if they so choose. I only seem to attack those whom seem to hate. You seem to fall into that category at times. The key word here obviously “seem”.

Yes, we believe John the Beloved, and the three Nephites did not taste of death and were permitted by Jesus to “tarry until I come” (John 21:22)

- - - - -
Actually, Norm, John 21:22 is in the SUBJUNCTIVE (If). Christ never says that John WILL tarry, just that IF he were it didn’t matter, IOW telling peter to MYOB.

Matt 21:22

22Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” 23Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

So, if they are still alive, and they had the priesthood, then the Priesthood never left the earth and there was NO APOSTASY!

For someone who is unashamed of the gospel, you are sure reluctant to state it.

Only $140 for a 1997 California Sonoma Zin?? Wow. I have a couple of bottle that are going for over $400. Of course, when I got them back in 1998 they were only $29.00.

Do I have to pay capital gains on wine?

I have been a Mormon for over ten years and never one time have I heard another Mormon condemn non Mormons to hell.

-0 - - - -
That is because they DON”T HAVE A HELL! Duh. But they do send them to a lesser kingdom which is pretty close to hell since they are not with God the father or ‘progressing’.

You still have said what that ‘gospel of Jesus Christ is’.

Spell it out Sandy.

Because Mormonism is NOT ‘good news’ and it is NOT Biblical in any way shape or form.

BTW, I love Mormons, if I didn’t I would let them just go to hell rather than try to reach them with the REAL GOOD NEWS.

And your pride in being Mormon, that’s a sin just so you know.

Is this an example of your philosphical and theological posting that's been mentioned lately?

When the apostle Paul was leaving to go to Jerusalem he gathered the elders of the Ephesian church and said to them....”I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in.. AMONG YOU...., not sparing the flock. Also among yourselves...MEN WILL RISE UP...speaking perverse things......TO DRAW AWAY THE DECIPLES AFTER THEMSELVES... Therefore watch and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.”......Acts20:20-30

This continues to this day and the Mormon leadership continues to sell Joseph Smith and his false teachings to the masses just as they did then. They hook people thru Christ....and then pull them in like a fish on a baited line...until they are trapped. The fish can't tell false bait...it looks good and feels good for a time...and satisfies the hunger...until they discover they are out of the water and into a frying pan.

No, no! The premortal life isn't in Men in Black, it's in the new Battlestar Galactica. Of course, they still have the 12 tribes looking for the lost 13th, so the new franchise is even more Mormon than the original. The new prequel series Caprica teaches us that computer avatars are our (self-created) souls!
