Priests are a gift from the Heart of Christ, Pope Benedict says

Vatican City, Jun 13, 2010 / 10:58 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Thousands of pilgrims and faithful gathered at noon Sunday in St. Peter’s Square to pray the Angelus with the Holy Father. Before the prayer, he said that the fruits of the recently ended Year for Priests could never be measured, but are already visible and will continue to be ever more so.

“The priest is a gift from the heart of Christ, a gift for the Church and for the world. From the heart of the Son of God, overflowing with love, all the goods of the Church spring forth,” proclaimed Pope Benedict XVI. “One of those goods is the vocations of those men who, conquered by the Lord Jesus, leave everything behind to dedicate themselves completely to the Christian community, following the example of the Good Shepherd.”

The Holy Father described the priest as having been formed by “the same charity of Christ, that love which compelled him to give his life for his friends and to forgive his enemies.”

“Therefore,” he continued, “priests are the primary builders of the civilization of love.”

Benedict XVI exhorted priests to always seek the intercession of St. John Marie Vianney, whose prayer, the “Act of Love,” was prayed frequently during the Year for Priests, and “continues to fuel our dialogue with God.”

The pontiff also spoke about the close of the Year for Priests, which took place this past week and culminated with the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He emphasized “the unforgettable days in the presence of more than 15,000 priests from around the world.”

The feast of the Sacred Heart is traditionally a “day of priestly holiness,” but this time it was especially so, Benedict XVI remarked.

Pope Benedict concluded his comments by noting that, in contemplating history, “one observes so many pages of authentic social and spiritual renewal which have been written by the decisive contribution of Catholic priests.” These were inspired “only by their passion for the Gospel and for mankind, for his true civil and religious freedom.”

“So many initiatives that promote the entire human being have begun with the intuition of a priestly heart,” he exclaimed.

The Pope then prayed the Angelus, greeted those present in various languages, and imparted his apostolic blessing.

it's hard to realize that all this time, a human being was not necessary to intercede on your behalf.

Who said it was NECESSARY? I said it wasn't forbidden, and invited you to prove that Christ is our ONLY mediator, which YOU stated. It is a spiritual work of mercy to pray for someone, to intercede/mediate on their behalf to Christ.

Why would I reply to my own post? I may have introduced it originally in the thread, but I did not say, as YOU did, in post 52: “The only mediator is Jesus Christ. He alone is the necessary Mediator. “

I merely asked you to support that statement with scripture, which you cannot do, so you are conflating the entire issue.

Christ is the only mediator necessary. Yes we are to pray for one another but I guess what is difficult for us 'non-catholics' why you continue with your idol worship of a human being (pope) and those who have passed (I'm sure you have the list).

If you didn't believe it was necessary, why do you continue to profess that it is? Then scoffing at those of us that follow the scriptures and know that it is Christ alone that we approach.

Worshipping the scripture is also idol worship. You will discover that apart from the Holy Spirit, the scriptures are just another Sears catalog.

Worship, instead, the Author of the scripture, and do not confuse HIM with the fallible translations and interpretations you cobble together..

More like they must be breaking his heart.

Some do, some don't, as with all of us.

No one said anything about you replying to your own post; it was used as a reference; your original post was the one that introduced the term mediatory. You cannot support your position in scripture because no where in the Holy Bible says a human being is charged with the duty of purging our sins or being in a meditory position.

The Holy Scripture is all that is needed for direction and instruction regarding everything about life. Scripture alone is the Inspired Word of God. It is not worshipped but is used as direction and instruction in order to draw closer to our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Whoopsie daisy! Let’s keep this straight, shall we?

Post 52, by you: The only mediator is Jesus Christ. He alone is the necessary Mediator.

Post 53 by me: Kindly show me the scripture (since you appear to be going sola scriptura) wherein God says, “Thou shalt have no other mediators than My Son between thee and Me.” Or, failing that, where Christ Himself says “I am thy ONLY mediator with God.”

After that, you proceed to do everything except support your pos5 52 with scripture.

I conclude that you cannot. So, it would be silly, ridiculous, and laughable to take anything seriously that you state, which you cannot support with Scripture. Again, worshiping scripture, which is a gift from God requiring the Holy Spirit, Holy Tradition, and the teaching authority of the Catholic Church to unerstand, is idolatry.

Yet, without love, Scripture is nothing.

And nowhere does it support your post #52. Amazing. My oh my.

Unbelieveable isn’t it? Jesus is the only way. All this time you seemed to believe that a human being (a priest) is necessary to intercede. I hope that you will make good use of your new found freedom.

Bless you Judith. It’s been an interesting exchange today. Oh, btw, I too listen to KTTR.

For the discussion:

For [there is] one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; - I Timothy 2:5

How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions [that were] under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. – Hebrews 9:14-15

How do you interpret 2 Corinth 2:10? I’m just curious, I saw it elsewhere, and thought you might have some particular insight.

So are you saying that Jesus Christ is not a priest?

The church was not born until Pentecost AFTER the final priest had died and risen again..so yes jesus was the Final priest, fulfilling the typology of the jewish priesthood. He was the final priest..

Are you saying that St. Paul did not claim to minister in the manner of a priest?

Where does Paul state that ??

I wonder, sometimes, if there isn't an anti-Catholic bias somewhere around here...sort of a "never ever use the word 'priest' because it means the same as Catholic!" point of view....never admit that the word "priest" comes from "presbyter," never admit that "priests" and "elders" were sometimes the same in the early church.

The Bible is my source Judith ..The bible does not outline a role for the priest in the new church.. no bias..just reading the infallible word of God in context

try as you might to change the greek language it stands Judith ..no priesthood in the NT church until 300 years after the cross..

There is no apostolic succession taught in the scripture, no pope and no priesthood

If God intended Protestant heresy, that would have been outlined in the NT.

Your words do not change the truth of the fact there was no apostolic succession taught in scripture, no Pope and most of all no priesthood..

Neglect not the grace that is in thee, which was given thee by prophesy, with imposition of the hands of the priesthood. (1 Timothy 4:14)

This may be a shock but elders and deacons are ordained with the laying on of hands.. this scripture does not prove there is a priesthood in the New Testament church

The roll of priest is very specific ... and there is no more priesthood.. you guys just have to deal with the fact that the Pope, apostolic succession and the priesthood are extra biblical roles never given to the new church buy God
