Because he had no official name for the sea he saw. He said it the way he saw it.
The sea.
Don't try saying that three times fast.
FWIW, when I started studying the end times I first looked for specific things that must occur at the start of the Tribulation. Among these key events are the Temple is rebuilt and the two witnesses evangelize in front of it for 3 1/2 yrs. These two things occur at the start and go to the mid point of the Tribulation at which time the "abomination of desolation" desecrates the Temple.
IOW, if the Temple isn't at least in the process of being built the first half of the Tribulation can't be underway. So, we can be assured that the bad things that are happening are not the events we've been told about that occur during the Tribulation. I haven't mentioned the Rapture because there are different views of whether it's pre-trib, or mid-trib. I think it will be pre-trib.
for example, imagine when a third of all sea life dies!
this is minuscule compared...
Thanks so much for pointing this out. I’ve been pondering the significance of this blow out.
The first thing it confirmed is the abiotic theory of oil, as opposed to the peak theory of oil.
The second thought I had, which could be totally bogus, was the possibility that maybe by drilling so far into the crust the result we are seeing might be coming from one of the outer rings of hell (that is if one believes that hell is located under our feet).
The third interpretation is yours. Here is what the Douay Rheims look like:
8 And the second angel sounded the trumpet: and as it were a great mountain, burning with fire, was cast into the sea, and the third part of the sea became blood: 9 And the third part of those creatures died, which had life in the sea, and the third part of the ships was destroyed. 10 And the third angel sounded the trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, burning as it were a torch, and it fell on the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters:
11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood. And the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter. 12 And the fourth angel sounded the trumpet, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars, so that the third part of them was darkened, and the day did not shine for a third part of it, and the night in like manner. 13 And I beheld, and heard the voice of one eagle flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice: Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth: by reason of the rest of the voices of the three angels, who are yet to sound the trumpet.
The Apocalypse Of Saint John

If Chernobyl was Wormwood, the trumpets are already being sounded out of order. But that is okay, as some of the things in the Apocalypse are more circulant than linear.
Most people have extreme difficulty perceiving time in any but a linear fashion.
Kind of like how most people have difficulty in perceiving any but a base 10 counting system.
Our POV of time is explicitly one way linear. (Reverse only no less)
An immortal being beyond our space time matter dimension is not bound by it, and can look at it backwards forwards sideways upside-down and inside-out.
I suspect they were see-sawing the needle in the time groove back and forth while they were showing this to John. Also our perspective ability gets bent when compressing so many events into a small time frame.
