Mormon Doctrine is finally going out of print. The late apostle Bruce R. McConkies interpretation of LDS theology was a common sight in the homes of active Mormons for decades. Even today, its often seen in the homes of older Mormons. In fact, it will likely be decades before the book becomes difficult to find in used bookstores or ebay, etc.
Peggy Fletcher Stack of the Salt Lake Tribune wrote an excellent article about the popular but polarizing Mormon Doctrine. McConkies book was written as an authoritative index of beliefs, but in truth it caused much controversy; in fact as much from outside critics as within the hierarchy of the Mormon Church. The first edition of Mormon Doctrine and a copy of that must be considered rare prompted the LDS leadership to propose more than 1,000 changes. Eventually, in the early 1960s, McConkie revised Mormon Doctrine...
Nevertheless, as an active Mormon who grew up in the 1960s, 70s and early 80s, I can attest that the many times I or others had a dispute on theology, Mormon Doctrine was the first place we went to check and see who was right.
According to Fletcher Stacks article, a key problem with the first edition was severe attacks on the Roman Catholic Church. Later problems with the book were its content regarding blacks. In early editions, McConkie had stated a reversal of denying the priesthood to blacks would never occur. And even in the most recent edition McConkie wrote that God cursed Cain with a mark of dark skin, and he became the ancestor of the black race, writes Fletcher Stack.
In recent years, the Mormon Church has become public relations conscious...

So, the book that was once THE authoritative "go-to" book to settle questions has been "buried." RIP
The racist book written by a so-called Lds "apostle" has been "buried." RIP
Since an apostle, Paul, along with other apostles like John, Matthew and Peter, wrote a good chunk of the New Testament, wouldn't this be tantamount to God saying to any of these four, "Sorry, these books are just too negative about things. We must be public relations conscious; therefore, we are removing Matthew, John, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, Revelation, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, Colossians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, 1 Thessalonians, and 2 Thessalonians from the New Testament. Carry on." ????
There’s a Mormon church (LDS I suppose) up the road from my house. Good people. The bike riding & nametage wearing are a little wacky but they’re good people when I see them out and about.
I am eternally grateful that my God is the same yesterday today and will be tomorrow.
As a side note I certainly hope our Catholic brethren see this and realize lds are not their friends.
The only ones who will not "hear" the hateful practices of earlier mormonism will be the brainwashed members.
How many Protestants at one time or the other have called the Pope an anti-Christ, condemned the “Papists”, or called the Catholic Church ‘the whore of Babylon’?
Heck, google “whore of Babylon” and the very second entry is about a Protestant Christian fundamentalist calling the Catholics that.
Mormons do not have and have never had a monopoly on condemnation of the Catholic Church.
I’m Catholic and the LDS are my friends.
No one has said they’re not good people. The article is about a book that was used to guide the LdS church for many years and it’s influence on generations of mormons.
The article is also indicating how fickle the LdS church is as it relates to “distasteful” church doctrine and it’s potentially negative “public relations” impact to the church as opposed to following the words of their prophets and apostles.
I’ve been married to a mormon for 20+ years, she’s a good woman.
Well as a Catholic I have to say I have a very good legal advocate and consider him morally upstanding in his ethics who just happens to be Morman.
Our professional relationship depends on such and after interveiwing many legal advocates he and his Catholic associates rated very high over the alternatives.
When the term “LdS” is used, it’s not about the people, it’s about doctrine of mormonism that condemns the Catholic Church as the whore of Babylon.
I have many friends who are mormon as well, in fact, I’ve been married to one for 20+ years, she’s a good woman. No argument on the point that they are good people. Misguided and deluded, but good people nonetheless.
I think people here should concentrate on posting uplifting articles.
Having an anti Catholic slew here at Free Republic that bash us non stop esp at Christmas and during Lent I have often wondered what religeon they proclaim.
Does anyone know?
I am guessing Calvanists? Just a guess folks dont jump my hide.
Show me.
Take it up with the owner/creator of FR and the Religion Moderator.
They set the rules. If you don’t like the content, you’re free to pass it by. If FR only allowed material to be posted based on what certain people “think”, there would be little here.
Many have thin skin and are easily offended. FR is a place for the free exchange of ideas and comments within the parameters established.
I only posted to you in order to correct any potential misconception you may have had regarding the previous post.
I don’t know anything about all that, what I do know is that you post anti-Mormon articles day after day after day so obviously you have some kind of axe to grind. And thats your choice.
Me? I was just stating that the Mormons I know are good people and I though I might think their religion has somewhat wacky roots it produces good and ethical people for the most part, and that is what counts.
Not to jump where I have not been invited but I don’t stick my nose into other peoples religeous practices unless its to defend an attack on my Catholic faith.
Along with the 2010 years of history in teachings/arts/sci ect of the Catholic Church I have more than a lifetime of learning to do and don’t have time to look at other doctrine to critisize what other Americans practice as their faith peacefully.
I will give kudos to the Mormon Church for there job in advocating the law of Marraige between a man/woman down in Cali.
That was a huge effort on their behalf in time/money.
Amen. Amen. Sister.

You’ll find that the religion section here has become a haven for anti-LDS activists. Several of them definitely have an axe to grind and attack daily.
Imagine if they challenged all this energy into something good?
Losers have the time to become "friends".
That's a BOLD FACED lie and your attempting to read my mind which is against the RF's rules.
I have never posted an anti-Mormon article.
If you don't know "anything about all that", then that's your choice to remain ignorant. I tried to inform you of basic facts. You choose ignorance. Good luck with that.
I agreed with your assessment that mormons are good people, what's the problem? Misguided and deluded, but good people nonetheless.
You want to perpetuate a misconception, be prepared to be corrected.
