Nifonging the Catholic Church

I seriously wonder about some FReepers, sometimes. Any other person accused of a crime would be defended by every FReeper as being innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. I've seen whole threads written by men who have been accused of child abuse by ex-wives out to deny them their visitation rights or to wrest more money out of them. These men are rightly indignant, and furious about the unjust accusations that cannot be proven but are never withdrawn.

Yet where are those FReepers when a PRIEST is accused? Where is the presumption of innocence? Suddenly, every accusation becomes a verdict, and not only the accused but his entire organization and all its adherents are held responsible.

I can only wonder what some of these so-called conservatives (who so faithfully defend the Constitution) would do, if THEY were the ones accused! It is a nightmare for any man -- all of you know how even the accusation stains the man forever, even if it is proven false!

Not only that, many here assert that the problems of 30, 40 and even 50 years ago must be tried in the media TODAY!

Remember the Duke rape case? There are more similarities than differences here. The priests are accused, nifonged, and instead of being defended, they are vilified!

What other man of you could stand under the weight of such an accusation trumpeted by the press, and come out whole? None! And such accusations made, LONG after the statute of limitations has passed, sometimes even after the accused is dead and buried for YEARS -- are YOU one of those who automatically, reflexively, spitefully, and gleefully act as judge, jury, and executioner?

Women! What if it were YOUR HUSBAND, YOUR BROTHER, YOUR FATHER, YOUR UNCLE, YOUR SON who was accused? Wouldn't you want the best defense possible? Wouldn't YOU believe in their innocence? Wouldn't YOU help protect your loved ones as much as possible? And yet, YOU JUDGE THE CHURCH FOR DOING WHAT YOU WOULD DO?

Shame! Vast shame! On all who have sinned against the innocent!

Its not about the monetary settlement for victims; it about justice.

Many of these victims aren’t allowed by law to pursue criminal charges because of statute of limitations. Civil lawsuits are their only means at this point. But that may soon be changing:

Thanks for that link. Very interesting. And encouraging.

If you read the article it acknowledges that the Catholic Church will especially at risk to these new changes in statutes.

lol. Is this your cue to dredge up errant Protestant ministers?

No doubt you'll find some. All men are sinners.

But not all sinners are protected by their church at the expense of children's lives as in the RCC.

I'll bet you can't wait......It could become a best seller. It will have sex, cover ups, denials, politics, payouts and more. You can be assured that it will be at least as fair, objective and balanced as your postings on the Catholic Church.

Don't get your expectations up too much. I have learned how to navigate with and around the inherent anti-Catholic bias of FR.

The “body count” refrain. If A has so many cases of sexual misconduct and B has 29% more than A, A is at least better than B and why aren't you after B, it being worse than A?

That you only went after B 5% as much as A shows you are 34% more bigoted against A than B and how can you refute the numbers?

Besides you have an agenda so the ‘man in bed with boy’ report is surely being exaggerated.

The victim are lying for the money. But when the guilty confessed they were telling the truth. How does that work?

"The “body count” refrain."

Hardly, it is compassion for ALL victims that their condition be recognized and remedied. Unlike the vast majority of the anti-Catholic crowd here on FR I am not content to only address that small percentage that are victims of Catholic clergy. But then again, I haven't got the same agenda as ya'll.

That's what TaxachusettsMan and sandyeggo said. The former is gone and failed to deliver his much-ballyhood opus, and all record of the latter's former existence on FR has been wiped clean.

"That's what TaxachusettsMan and sandyeggo said."

That kind of feels like a threat, is it? Like I said; "Don't get you expectation up too much". I would hate to disappoint you. I don't expect to change the anti-Catholic bias or even get anyone to acknowledge it. I just know that it exists and how to circumvent it.

Certainly all the hot talk against accused abusers doesn't come from 'anti-Catholics' at FR. Catholic FReepers know that some allegations are well-founded (even if not yet proven in court) and we detest the way some Bishops have protected, shielded and enabled abusers. (Want names? Let me mention Mahony, Law and Weakland). We are very conscious of what Our Lord said about those who harm children:

If anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and be cast into the depths of the sea.

When there are credible allegations--- e.g., multiple victims are accusing the same guy --- Church and State must move fast to remove the offender from society. This is what just happened here IN THE PAST WEEK in the Diocese of Knoxville with a priest who --- it was just discovered --- committed disgusting abuses 35 years ago. Our Bishop Richard Stika turned him in to the civil athorities and dismissed him immediately and permanently from any exercise of the priesthood.

And all the Catholics in the Diocese--- shocked, saddened, heart-sick --- are saying "Amen!"

But there really has been a problem on this site with people who have enthusiastically made or repeated rash judgments with little or no evidence, generalizing them indiscriminately to Catholicism as such.

The recent attempts to slime Pope Benedict, personally, have all had the character of rash judgment, calumny, and slander, as is evident to those who have taken the time and care to examine the evidence.

This offense against truth can be seen here at Free Republic, committed by not by "the many," but by a handful of toxic posters whose anger or bias has motivated them to spread foul calumnies as broadly and as rapidly as they can.

This is not directed against you, Prospero. Not at all.

I have filed these names in my brainbox and will not drawn into a dispute with them under any circumstances. It is as much as I an do to push away from the computer, go outside and pull kudzu vines, and -- through gritted teeth ---pray.
