Nifonging the Catholic Church
me ^ | April 18, 2010 | vanity

Posted on 04/18/2010 9:49:35 PM PDT by Judith Anne

I seriously wonder about some FReepers, sometimes. Any other person accused of a crime would be defended by every FReeper as being innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. I've seen whole threads written by men who have been accused of child abuse by ex-wives out to deny them their visitation rights or to wrest more money out of them. These men are rightly indignant, and furious about the unjust accusations that cannot be proven but are never withdrawn.

Yet where are those FReepers when a PRIEST is accused? Where is the presumption of innocence? Suddenly, every accusation becomes a verdict, and not only the accused but his entire organization and all its adherents are held responsible.

I can only wonder what some of these so-called conservatives (who so faithfully defend the Constitution) would do, if THEY were the ones accused! It is a nightmare for any man -- all of you know how even the accusation stains the man forever, even if it is proven false!

Not only that, many here assert that the problems of 30, 40 and even 50 years ago must be tried in the media TODAY!

Remember the Duke rape case? There are more similarities than differences here. The priests are accused, nifonged, and instead of being defended, they are vilified!

What other man of you could stand under the weight of such an accusation trumpeted by the press, and come out whole? None! And such accusations made, LONG after the statute of limitations has passed, sometimes even after the accused is dead and buried for YEARS -- are YOU one of those who automatically, reflexively, spitefully, and gleefully act as judge, jury, and executioner?

Women! What if it were YOUR HUSBAND, YOUR BROTHER, YOUR FATHER, YOUR UNCLE, YOUR SON who was accused? Wouldn't you want the best defense possible? Wouldn't YOU believe in their innocence? Wouldn't YOU help protect your loved ones as much as possible? And yet, YOU JUDGE THE CHURCH FOR DOING WHAT YOU WOULD DO?

Shame! Vast shame! On all who have sinned against the innocent!

Sheesh. Don’t take such offense when none is intended.

Thanks for agreement. I still have hopes Free Republic will remain a "PC" free zone!

So much for the argument that Paul did not reiterate the Gospel in his letters.

Amen. In the Old Testament the Jews were warned not to create an image of God.

In the New Testament, God provides us with His own portrait.

"(Jesus Christ) who is the image of the invisible God..." -- Colossians 1:15

INDEED.

And, I might have looked at that error and it not registered as a significant error, either.

We’ve had a discussion, or ten, before about even the use of the title “catholic”. Since the word in the lower case means “universal” it applies to all true Christians who are part of the spiritual body of Christ, to my understanding. So in that sense, I am a catholic but I am no longer a Catholic, nor a member of the Catholic Church under the Bishop of Rome, nor Eastern Orthodox Catholic, or Oriental Catholic, etc.

Agreed. It seems that there is just about no way to refer to Catholics who belong to or follow or what ever, the Roman tradition headquartered in the Vatican without offending some one, some how.

The term *catholic* does mean universal and the Catholic church cannot justifiably lay claim to the term as its own.

Since there are also other sects of Catholicism which use the word *Catholic* in their title and have slightly different teachings from the Roman Catholic branch, as in *Ukrainian Catholic*, then by designating *Roman Catholic* you are referring to the specific branch of Catholicism.

Since the word *Roman* begins with the letter *R* and the word *Catholic* begins with the letter *C*, it is completely reasonable to use the abbreviation of *RC* to mean *Roman Catholic* regardless of whatever meaning someone managed to attach to it some hundred years ago or so.

The objections to the use of this term remind me too much of the Asians in Atlanta who are complaining about the metro lines which were color coded. They didn't like *Yellow Line* because apparently the yellow line ran through their Chinatown, and they are now demanding that it be relabeled.

That was my thought as well. Happens to me all the time and I don't always proofread as well as I should.

Hey...that's the only way I can remember his name sometimes!!! ;o)

I suppose that we could always use RCC, for Roman Catholic Church to accommodate all the hurt feelings. Unless they find something objectionable about THAT as well.

*sigh*

"So, 1800s and early 1900s notwithstanding, since that was just shy or a hundred years ago, you’ve got some generations of people in between them that never heard of the abbreviation used in that derogatory way."

Whats your point. Its 150 years since the emancipation proclamation and 50 years since the voter rights bill but the use of the N word is still hurtful.

Which Catholics use the term RC to refer to themselves? I am aware of none.

Mark, the Religion Moderator already answered that question in a direct post to you here in POST 2663.

Did you miss it? Most of us didn't.

So now you know. You no longer have an excuse.

If you wish to become acquainted with the antiCatholic terminology of the 1800s and early 1900s, I would be happy to be your guide.

And what, exactly, is the point of dredging up old offenses?

If people have forgotten about them, why keep reminding of them? Why keep picking at that old scab?

If Protestants are being expected to forget Roman Catholic Church history like the Inquisition, etc, because they are in the past and over and done with, why not like the past be the past and the whole RC thing be over and done with?

Why keep making an issue of it?

I said that's the first time I had heard it. I didn't say I believed it.

Someone else's misuse of a word is not my responsibility.
