Do Mormons need an Anti-Defamation League?
Mormon Times ^ | March 31, 2010 | Joel Campbell

Posted on 03/31/2010 9:00:52 AM PDT by Colofornian

Jews have one. Catholics have one. Do Mormons need an independent anti-defamation group...

-- I suppose Latter-day Saints shouldn't be too surprised the latest put-down from Chuck Colson, leader of the Prison Fellowship. Ironically, it was as he and leaders of Christian groups announced a new "civility covenant."

When a reporter asked if the covenant should include Glenn Beck, CNN reported Colson saying that the document:

"Wouldn't apply to Glenn Beck because we're talking about the conversation in the family of believers ... Glenn Beck is a Mormon." CNN continues: "Many Christians don't consider Mormons -- members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints -- to be Christians, though Mormons consider themselves Christian."

Colson's statements follow a long line of less-than-civil evangelical exclusionary actions including keeping Mormons out of National Day of Prayer services to a Christian student press group excluding BYU journalism students from its competition.

SNIP

Here's another example from friends at the ADL during the campaign entitled "Judge Romney by his platform, not his Mormonism":

"But two recent polls found that at least one quarter of Americans said they would not vote for a Mormon for president. These findings are troubling and disappointing, but so is the fact that some religious conservatives have compared the Mormon religion to a 'cult' and its doctrines to paganism. The Web site of Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network, for example, says the religious beliefs of Mormons 'are simply wrong,' and 'when it comes to spiritual matters, the Mormons are far from the truth.' While doctrinal differences and debates among Christian groups are their own theological business, such assertions are surely painful and disturbing."

Good point.
Call us “whores of Babylon” that is Christians and until a few years ago bristle at the thought anyone would refer to you as such and now “I want to be called a Christian” and if you don’t “I’ll stamp my feet and hold my breath”.

True the flds follow Joseph Smith's original doctrines, something the current lds do not. (Their god keeps changing his mind about stuff). So the fdls are really mormons not the lds.

Mormons are pretty good on the exclusion stuff themselves, as we’ve seen on that thread about the mother not being allowed in to view her son’s wedding.

Indeed - well exposed.

All Christianity is corrupt; why join in with corruption?

Merchandising, merchandising, merchandising...

Christianity has great brand name recognition...

PR in order to worm their way in to gain converts among unsuspecting/uneducated Christians.

FLDS are way, way closer to LDS, then LDS to any christian denomination.

That is a very correct observation.

Does CAIR have to talk about Muslim beliefs? Other than the convenient ones which a lot of people share?

Yes. But when they do, they simply lie, saying they DON'T believe what they do, and that they DO believe what they don't. I don't think the Mormons want to do anything resembling that. And we know that no Mormon ADL would be inclined to reveal the temple secrets, or the more unusual doctrines.

So I don't think there'll be a Mormon ADL, per se.

mormon/islam

There is a valid comparison, in that both had “prophets” that re-wrote both New and Old Testament Scripture to suit his own needs at that time.

Although a better comparison to my way of thinking is mormon/scientology. I believe that l.ron hubbard may well have looked at the “chruch of j.smith” and thought that will be a good way to get the adoration and benefits I want.

Both j.smith and l.ron were quite “creative” in there personal histories.

"original doctrines" ...its like its some sacred holy thing and isn't it really just a rationale to let men carry off 13yrs for "wives"...I read that Joseph Smith was especially "holy" in that reguard....

look, I will vote for Mitt if he is the candidate....mormon people I know are mostly decent good people....their faith has a very odd and suspect foundation IMO of course...

Should Christians or Baptists Do form an Anti-Defamation League?

They are after all derided by missionaries as being Apostates and whores of Babylon as are all other creeds.

The worst among them being the Presbyterians.

Anti-Defamation League?

With God in our corner, whining to a support group seems like a waste of time.

The truly sad problem I see, when Mormons feel defamed by Christian leaders who claim that they do not qualify as Christian because of their definition of God, Jesus, Satan, etc., is the fact that Mormons do not believe that the rest of those of us who are believers to be Christians.

I have this "issue" going on in my own family, so I know it's no laughing matter.

If you can be civil with a marxist you can darned sure be civil with a mormon.

Difference between tone and content. (Too many Lds think when you're speaking negatively about faith content you are being "uncivil." It would make too much "out-of-bounds" for discussion)

what did Jesus do to the temple in the scriptures?

I wondered the same thing when I visited a friend's church for "Las Vegas Day" in the basement. Beer and Brats served and Priests dealing black jack. (This was for real money, not "prizes")

My thought was, "if this church fell in on the two hundred or so of us, would any survive"?

I think there will be no Mormon Defamation League. Mormons would have to talk about how they were ‘defamed.’ That would open up a dialogue of their beliefs and that would be embarrassing.

You said it!

How about Christians. We need one.

Nahhhh. Let 'em defame. I peeked at the last chapter of the book and we win.

- - - - - - -
That is EXACTLY what Mormons do.

Been there, done that, was shocked to find out that what they really believed was different than what I was taught before I joined and then told to lie to potential converts if I went on an LDS mission.

And there was a blog pimp on here last year who is trying to say that speaking out against Mormonism is ‘hate speech’ and should be prosecuted as such. So, I see this happening easily.
