Urroner was in the “mormon” uniform of “white shirt and tie”...now it may be that the Evangelical congregation was wearing more casual wear, and someone in a tie would naturally stand out. People would naturally take notice of someone different...were they all “glaring”?

That is very likely. My congregation would stars at the PASTOR if he showed up in a white shirt and tie.
He wears a suit on Easter and Christmas (visitors) and makes Johnny Cash jokes b/c it is the only time he is ever in a suit on Sundays.

My brother wears shorts and Hawaiian shirts when he preaches.
My son in law takes off his shoes.
Nope I don't know why either one does that but they do and it has nothing to do with preaching the Word of God.
I was in a service with a South African preacher and some oldsters complain to him that he didn't wear a shirt and tie. The next week he came dressed in his native garb which basically was a piece of material tied around his waist. No one ever complained again.
White shirt and tie, really what did he expect. It just looks silly unless you are part of the Geek Squad.
