Or maybe, just maybe, scripture means what it says, and “on the third day” refers to the third day after the crucifixion, as in “Friday, Saturday, Sunday.”
Look, my mind is wide open on the matter. I find it both interesting and enlightening to put aside what I’ve been told and read scripture anew, looking at what it actually says rather than what other people say it says. It’s dangerous to cling to tradition over truth as the Pharisees did.
“. . . it is the third day since all of this took place,” Cleopas and his friend told Jesus on Sunday (Luke 24:21).
I can’t find any justification at all in scripture for a Friday crucifixion, other than that the following day was a Sabbath.
“”Now it was the Day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath.” (John 19:31)
Since we know it was the Passover Sabbath (see Lev. 23:7), it could have fallen on any day of the week. However, the women didn’t go to the tomb until Sunday morning, so we know they were apparently kept away by Sabbath restrictions between the time of burial and sunrise Sunday. A Thursday crucifixion, Friday Passover sabbath, Saturday weekly sabbath, and Sunday resurrection explains everything.
I’ve been at this for six decades, plan to keep studying till the Lord calls me home. Then I hope for a first-hand account of how it all went down. Won’t that be truly awesome?
“On the third day”, says Paul, was “the third day ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES” -— the passover Scriptures; and refers to Exodus chapter 10 to 15, “Three days darkness” and the “plague”. The Exodus “three days” are the equivalent of Jonah’s three days in “hell” and they typified Jesus’ days of Last Suffering and Crucifixion, of Burial, and of Resurrection -— respectively.
It explains too much: it explains a fourth day which the Scriptures do not explain ....
Six decades! I have been busy on this ‘topic’, five decades and still discovers new things. It won’t harm you, to try http://www.biblestudents.co.za There is more from biblestudents@imaginet.co.za
This is a lying report: “Now it was the Day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath” John says on the contrary: “That Day was great day of sabbath”
