This is bad news for those who have hope for Notre Dame University. Dr. Charles Rice has been writing a column for the Notre Dame Observer for many years. But this week, the editors refused to run his column on the Church's teaching on homosexuality. Joe from Defend Us In Battle writes:
Notre Dame... fails again.
This is hitting just now in a few well respected Catholic News outlets:
Dr. Charles Rice (Notre Dame Law School - Bio) recently wrote a column/piece for the Notre Dame Observer, as he does every few weeks. The topic this week is: The Church's Teaching On Homosexuality. Only... this week they didn't print it.
Here is the article: Dr. Rice's - "Right or Wrong?" Column: March 1, 2010 - Homosexuality.
The Editor of the Observer didn't print it for a variety of reasons...or so they say. None of the listed reasons was legitimate.
You've got to read the editor's letter and Dr. Rice's response. It's a great response to a very sad situation. Click here to read it.

“Why should it matter”?
Who lives out that faith? Who are those who constitute faithful examples of Christ?
There are very good reasons for proclaiming saints, if there were none, then we wouldn’t have a Church, let alone a single saint.
There is “no Glory to God” if Jesus never changed anyone’s life, this is the reality of his mission. A death and resurrection which reached no one is meaningless.
Because we have examples of personal faith, we can say that there is something concrete about that faith.

That is honestly as well as I’ve heard it put - thank you, that was most inspiring.

From Dr. Rice's response:
"You further propose that if I examine the topic of homosexuality in the future, we thought it might be beneficial to do so in a point-counterpoint format, perhaps with an author of an opposing or differing viewpoint. That way, each side, so to speak, would have the opportunity to present relevant facts, evidence and analysis to define its position."
Open question to The Observer:
Are you going to apply the same standard to all other issues of sin addressed in your publication?
Should a commentator who sddresses the ramifications of murder be "counterpointed" with the opinions of a psychopath who took pleasure in his victim's suffering?
Or perhaps the viewpoint of a serial molester could be juxtaposed against the crime of pedophilia? (And of course, we can easily find a few Muslim goat rapers to enlighten us on the joys of bestiality.)
Kudos Dr. Rice. But for your stand on this wedge issue, the other examples I mentioned would not be hyperbole for long.

In so doing, the school is only hurting themselves.Yes, true, themselves. And no doubt some of their students, too. Seems they are getting mileage out of calling themselves Catholic, but are CINO at best.

Ill never forget the time he came into my high school class room in South Bend and proved the existence of God by reason and logic.Wow. You were very fortunate, some of us were sitting through (or walking out of) high school and college classes that were drivel, even heretical (yes, Catholic institutions). What a privilege that must have been.
