I’ve brought this up several times on these kinds of reads.

In Asia (we have labored in northern Asia, central, and the Philippines; our eldest son who is a linguist also has labored independently in Mongolia and elsewhere), there is still this “good luck/bad luck,” “good omen/bad omen” concenpt in the mind. We approach it every day when presenting the Gospel of Christ to people.

Asians will add deities for “luck.” Buddha on the shelf, and add Mary to the shelf, and in the Philippines a “Santo Nino.” In the Philippines it is no exaggeration to say that this is the practice of millions of Eucharist-receiving Catholics.
