Father Donald Henke and Deacon Joe LaMartina distribute ashes to students at Immacolata Parish School in St. Louis Feb 17. The Catholic Church observes Ash Wednesday by marking baptized Christians with a public and communal sign of penance at the start of Lent.


Father Issa Hijazeen places ashes on the foreheads of elementary students from the Latin Patriarchate School during an Ash Wednesday Mass at Annunciation Church in the West Bank city of Beit Jala.
