Former Fox News Anchor’s Mother Considered Abortion after Being Raped
Life Site News ^ | January 19, 2010 | Matt Anderson

Posted on 01/20/2010 7:56:50 AM PST by Between the Lines

This past Saturday, former Fox & Friends Weekend co-anchor Kelly Wright talked with Mike Huckabee on his Fox News show about his mother’s decision to give birth to him despite having conceived him in rape. Kelly made the appearance to promote his new book, “America’s Hope in Troubled Times.”

In his new book, Wright describes how his mother was raped when she was 16 years old, and how he was the result of that rape.

Calling the way he came into the world “very unique” Wright explained that in the summer of 1954 his mother had become close friends with the young wife of a pastor. One day, Wright’s mother went to her friend’s house to go shopping. However, her friend had already left, and when Wright’s mother entered the home of the pastor, he assaulted her.

Wright explained that there was nothing his mother could have done against the pastor because, “It would be her word against a reputable member of the community.”

“To make a long story short, she went ahead and continued to think that everything was okay, but then discovered she was pregnant.”

When Wright’s mother found out she was pregnant, she was offered an abortion as a means out. However, in 1954 abortions were still illegal, and Wright acknowledged that she would have been putting herself at great risk by undergoing one.

However, the primary reason Wright’s mother choose not to have him killed was her desire for children. Wright quotes his mother as having said, “This is god telling me that this may be the only biological child I have.” As it turns out, Wright’s mother was right, and Kelly would be her only biological child; Kelly’s sister was adopted.

Kelly Wright, in addition to being a correspondent for Fox News, is also now a pastor. He says, “It just shows how god was looking out for me and I had a purpose to live for.”

Mike Huckabee, a pastor himself, commented after Wright told his story, “For all of us who know you, that thought but by the grace of god and your mother having made another choice, you and I wouldn't be having this conversation.”

“It's the greatest affirmation for why it's important to value every life as having worth and value. And you just have vividly demonstrated that to us.”

Kelly Wright has worked in journalism since entering the army in 1977. He has covered such stories as the Iraq war, the 2004 presidential elections, and the death of Terri Schiavo. In a profile for Fox News, Wright said the person who had the most influence in his life was his mother, June Lorraine Overton.

However, in 1954 abortions were still illegal, and Wright acknowledged that she would have been putting herself at great risk by undergoing one.

While widely believed, this is essentially nonsense.

Under the circumstances, his mom could have undoubtedly gotten an abortion performed with up to date medical assistance. Such "back-door" as opposed to "back alley" abortions were always the norm, particularly for non-poor women.

The death rate from abortions dropped dramatically in the 30s and especially 40s because of advances in medical technology, particularly antibiotics.

Medical procedures don't become more or less risky due to their legal status. Sheesh.

A truly inspiring and touching story.

I'm seriously annoyed, however, by the fact that author Matt Anderson, and/or his editor at Life Site News, doesn't know that "God" should be capitalized. I guess it's just one more indication of the dismal state of education in the USA.

His mother’s decision would have been more strongly influenced by her perceptions than by reality. A sixteen-year old girl “in trouble” (as the saying went in those days) was hardly in a position to have made an “informed” decision.

I could never presume to understand the pain and hurt of a woman who has been raped, and the decision leading to a possible abortion.

At the same time though, a crime has been committed, but who is being punished the hardest?? The most innocent of those involved - the baby.

Under my Obamacare, you'll get an abortion whether you like it or not!

God bless Kelly Wright and his mother. She made the right choice and he has grown in to a good man.

Fair enough. Although at some point her parents probably noticed she was pregnant and presumably had some input on her choices.

I just wonder why God wasn’t capitalized, they managed to capitalize other proper names.

Choosing life over death, love and forgiveness over hatred, these are the moral decisions of a truly spiritual person. If after our death our souls are laid bare before the Lord, his mother’s soul will be judged to be like the finest of gold and that pastor, well it’s best not to mention what may become of him.

Proponents of abortion always use the rape argument to end the discussion, they assume that once that comes up, most people will be embarrassed and shut up - but there is a whole story about “children of rape” that needs to be told. Kelly is an exmaple of that.

I think Kelly Wright is one of the best and smoothest journalists Fox News has. I had no idea of the circumstances of his birth, or that he is also a minister. Hats off to his mother and him.
