ctor Sam Elliott claims that the Catholic Church prevented Hollywood from proceeding with the next two films in the His Dark Materials trilogy based on Philip Pullmans books.
The Catholic Church ... lambasted them, said Elliott. I think it scared New Line off.
The film...angered Catholics who accused it of promoting atheism.
In the book trilogy, set in a series of parallel worlds, heroine Lyra fights the Magisterium, an evil organisation some have interpreted as being based on the Catholic Church.
Pullman, 63, told the Western Mail: "If Sam is right then I am very disappointed because it obviously would have been very good to have seen the other two films made."
Catholic League president Bill Donohue, an outspoken opponent of the movie commented on reports that there will be no sequel to The Golden Compass, saying two years ago, the Catholic League launched a boycott of The Golden Compass in the hope that Christian parents would keep their children away from the film and thus not be inclined to buy them His Dark Materials, the trilogy of pro-atheist books aimed at young people. We also wanted to discourage the possibility that producers would make a movie of The Subtle Knife, the second book of the trilogy. We knew we succeeded in the first goal, and had every reason to believe we were going to win on the second one. Now Pullman has confirmed our victory: there will be no sequel.
Pullman has been widely quoted in Britain taking aim at me for my alleged triumphalism. The accusation is accurate. I am positively gloating. Cheers, everyone!"
To be fair, the movie sucked.
That is the dumbest excuse I have ever heard.
They usually make movies BECAUSE Christians don’t like them.
Oh please. New Line couldn’t care less about anything other than if the movies would have been profitable.

I think what scared New Line off was how poorly the movie did at the box office.
Good riddance to a nefarious story. I’m not particularly sympathetic to complaints about movie content ... but apparently this storyline was absolutely satanic.

Atheists hate imagination so we should never expect much from them in the first place.
If you think the market will meet demand, then finance it yourself as Mel Gibson did with The Passion of the Christ.
...which had a lot to do with Christians boycotting the movie.
“...which had a lot to do with Christians boycotting the movie.”
Which is not the same as, “The Catholic Church lambasted it.”

Complete rubbish. I have watched movies even w blatant anti-religion/Christian dialogue and scenes and how come those movies were “stopped” by the Church?
Maybe Sam should get his head out of his ass and wake up to reality: the movie blows chunks.
I have never heard the word “magisterium” used
except as a reference to the Catholic Church.
Imagine if Pullman had done a novel about
people from a faraway land who seemed to
have a love of moeny making schemes,
gold and jewelry, and called them “Jewlarians”; would he then complain loudly if the ADL boycotted it?
According to Box Office Mojo, the movie cost $180 million to make, and grossed only $70 million domestically and $302 million in foreign receipts. Grossing a grand total of only twice the cost of the movie doesn’t cover all of the expenses. That’s why no sequel will be made.
BTW, Box Office Mojo readers gave the movie a C+.
"Golden Compass" just totally sucked as a piece of celluloid.
THE BLIND SIDE
Domestic Total as of Dec. 30, 2009: $192,962,000 (Estimate)
Pretty amazing.
As a movie it sucked and I saw it on opening night. I was intrigued by what appeared to be the more steam punkish elements which the movie except for a few minutes actually really lacked. On top of that the “heroine” was a foul mouthed spoilt brat and the other characters had as much personality as a cardboard cut out. This movie spelt the end of New Line. The movie did very good BO overseas but New Line pre-sold the foreign rights to finance the production and marketing so it was relying on the US BO to make a profit.
I find this hard to believe, but it is a nice scapegoat. :)
To tell the truth; I saw previews of that flick when in a theater to see another one. I saw enough in the previews to know that I COULDN”T WAIT TO MISS the actual movie. I am not a Catholic, but I am a blood-washed Christian, and my “radar” told me there was nothing Christ-honoring or even uplifting about that flick that would make it worth going to see it.
For anyone wishing to see a really nice flick, may I recommend “The Ultimate Gift” which is availble on DVD now, starring James Garner, Lee Merriwether, and Bill Cobbs, et al.
I went to it not knowing or caring about any politics of the film, I love sci-fi fantasy..the movie was awful.. no excuse more than that is needed.
“The Blind Side” is a really nice flick. ALMOST as good as “The Ultimate Gift”.
