The default meaning of the word Catholic is universal (Christian). One does not call themselves Catholic Christian, it's already implied/rooted in the Greek word (Catholic being the WHOLE body of believers of Christ's Crucifixion and Resurrection with the purpose of conquering death so that sinners can stand before God -Father- blameless due to the sacrifice of the Son).
Quick take, for the unchristian lurker, God is looking for the faithful creation who loves the Creator, hence all that "death and stuff" from His Son, the Redeemer (Which is why an "all-powerful" God has not established a Utopian world of robotic creatures). Believe what you will.

Thanks; that's why I'm always careful to say Roman Catholic when I mean that sect.
