Dear Heavenly Father, we know you will bless those who are persecuted for Your sake. Please surround them with your strength, comfort and peace and turn this evil into glory for Thee. In Jesus’ Holy Name, Amen.

I knew CARE and Concern workers with horor stories from the last few years over in that neck of the woods. Eritrea isn’t good, but Ethiopia is a thousand times more vicious - not for religious reasons per se, just through general brutality and inept governance.

Orthodox Christianity, Roman Catholicism, Lutheranism and a few other Protestant groups are allowed to practice their religion freely in Eritrea. In fact, about half of all Eritreans are Oriental Orthodox Christians.

The groups which face imprisonment, which are very small, are made up of those who refuse, or are unable for some reason, to register with the government.

We don't have any Eritrean Orthodox members of our parish, but the Orthodox parish to the south of us does. They are very nice people. Apparently the people back in Eritrea get along pretty well with each other no matter what their religion except for the few Jehovah Witnesses, some “independent” Christians and Pentecostals who are definitely on the outs with the entire society out there.
