It stems from a belief in an immortal soul. Many don't realize that eternal life is a gift from God.
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Sin = death, eternal life is a gift given to believers upon being resurrected. The spirit is a promise, a guarantee of that.
2Co 5:5 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

This ignores the question of whether we have any other life than physical life.
If we don't have spiritual life, then how can we be ...... "absent from the body, present with the Lord" ?Also, ... did Jesus have any type of life between His death ... and resurrection ?
Didn't He descend into hell to preach to the spirits which were imprisoned there ?Ephesians 3:18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit,And ... btw, ... what type of life did these disobedient spirits have ?
