"Let it not be as a murderer or a thief, a malefactor or a coveter of other men's goods that any of you suffer; but if it is for the name of Christian, let him be not ashamed, but glorify God in that name." --- Blessed Apostle Saint Peter ( First Epistle 4:15-16 )

Feast of Saint Rose, Virgin, of Lima, Peru

Patroness of India, Latin America and the Philippines
Some half century after the conquest of America by the Spaniards, the city of Lima, founded at the foot of the Andes Mountains as the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru, was suffering so great a corruption of customs that Saint Francis Solanus threatened it with divine chastisements, as the Prophet Jonah threatened Nineveh. Divine Mercy, however, was already acting in the soul of a child capable of making the necessary expiation.
Rose of Lima, born on April 20, 1586, grew under the protection of Divine Goodness. She took the third order habit of Saint Dominic at age 20, offering constant prayer and sacrifices in her small oratory in the family garden. She was only 31 years of age when, on the evening of Saint Bartholomews feast (August 24) in 1617, she cried out: The Spouse is here! and she delivered her soul to God.
The first canonized saint of the New World has one characteristic of all saintsthe suffering of oppositionand another characteristic which is more for admiration than for imitationexcessive practice of mortification.
She was born to parents of Spanish descent in Lima, Peru, at a time when South America was in its first century of evangelization. She seems to have taken Catherine of Siena as a model, in spite of the objections and ridicule of parents and friends.
The saints have so great a love of God that what seems bizarre to us, and is indeed sometimes imprudent, is simply a logical carrying out of a conviction that anything that might endanger a loving relationship with God must be rooted out. So, because her beauty was so often admired, Rose used to rub her face with pepper to produce disfiguring blotches. Later, she wore a thick circlet of silver on her head, studded on the inside, like a crown of thorns.
When her parents fell into financial trouble, she worked in the garden all day and sewed at night. Ten years of struggle against her parents began when they tried to make Rose marry. They refused to let her enter a convent, and out of obedience she continued her life of penance and solitude at home as a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic. So deep was her desire to live the life of Christ that she spent most of her time at home in solitude.
During the last few years of her life, Rose set up a room in the house where she cared for homeless children, the elderly and the sick. This was a beginning of social services in Peru. Though secluded in life and activity, she was brought to the attention of Inquisition interrogators, who could only say that she was influenced by grace.
What might have been a merely eccentric life was transfigured from the inside. If we remember some unusual penances, we should also remember the greatest thing about Rose: a love of God so ardent that it withstood ridicule from without, violent temptation and lengthy periods of sickness. When she died at 31, the city turned out for her funeral. Prominent men took turns carrying her coffin.
Virgin, born at Lima, Peru 20 April, 1586; died there 30 August, 1617. This South American Saint's real name was Isabel, but she was such a beautiful baby that she was called Rose, and that name remained.
As she grew older, she became more and more beautiful, and one day, her mother put a wreath of flowers on her head to show off her loveliness to friends. But Rose had no desire to be admired, for her heart had been given to Jesus. So she put a long pin into that wreath and it pierced her so deeply, that she had a hard time getting the wreath off afterward. Another time she became afraid that her beauty might be a temptation to someone, since people could not take their eyes off her. Therefore, she rubbed her face with pepper until it was all red and blistered.
Saint Rose worked hard to support her poor parents and she humbly obeyed them, except when they tried to get her to marry. That she would not do. Her love of Jesus was so great that when she talked about Him, her face glowed and her eyes sparkled.
Rose had many temptations from the devil, and there were also many times when she had to suffer a feeling of terrible loneliness and sadness, for God seemed far away. Yet she cheerfully offered all these troubles to Him. In fact, in her last long, painful sickness, this heroic young woman use to pray:
-
"Lord, increase my sufferings, and with them increase Your love in my heart."
Many miracles followed her death. She was beatified by Pope Clement IX, in 1667, and canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X, the first in the Western Hemisphire to be so honored.
The young woman who prayed and suffered amidst the general corruption of her city desired to live in silence and obscurity. Her action after death, however, made her the Patron Saint of Peru, and Pope Clement X extended her protection to all of South America, the Philippine Islands and India.

Lesson from the Epistle of Blessed Paul the Apostle to the Galatians.
Brethren, To Abraham were the promises made and to his seed. He saith not:" And to his seeds, "as of many but as of one: "And to Thy seed," which is Christ. Now this I say, that the testament which was confirmed by God, the law which was made after four hundred and thirty years, doth not disannul to make the promise of no effect. For if the inheritance be of the law it is no more of promise. But God gave it to Abraham by promise. Why then was the law? It was set because of transgressions until the seed should come, to whom He made the promise, being ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator is not of one: but God is one. Was the law then against the promises of God? God forbid. For if there had been a law given, which could give life, verily justice should have been by the law. But the Scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by the faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

A continuation of the Holy Gospel recorded by Blessed Apostle Saint Mark A t that time Jesus was going to Jerusalem, He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee: and as He entered into a certain town, there met Him ten men that were lepers, who stood afar off, and lifted up their voice, saying: Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. Whom when He saw, He said: "Go, show yourselves to the priests." And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were made clean. And one of them, when he saw that he was made clean, went back, with a loud voice glorifying God: and he fell on his face before His feet, giving thanks: and this was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said: "Were not ten made clean? And where are the nine? There is no one found to return, and give glory to God, but this stranger." And He said to him: "Arise, go thy way for thy faith hath made thee whole." |

HOMILY FOR THE THIRTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST September 3, 2006 Anno Domini
by Father Louis J. Campbell "Qui legit, intelligat" "He who readeth, let him understand"
In Him the Promises Are Fulfilled
There is nothing new under the sun when it comes to new promises for the Son fulfilled all God promised and documented such in Divine Revelation which has been passed down in Scripture and Tradition through His one, True Church. Today many want to twist the meaning of the Promises made, but they can be listed with those lepers who did not return to acknowledge Christ's healing for they did not have faith. It takes faith, hope and love to know that Jesus Christ is the only "Way, the Truth, and the Life."
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
"The promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring" ( Galatians 3:15 ). In this one statement, Blessed Apostle Saint Paul cuts through the false hopes and aspirations of those who claim natural descent from Abraham. Their hopes will never be fulfilled and their struggles will be fruitless until they humble themselves and recognize Jesus Christ as "the Way, and the Truth, and the Life" ( Blessed Apostle Saint John 14:6 ).
The "offspring" is Christ, says Blessed Apostle Saint Paul. He is the One in Whom the promises of God are fulfilled. Jesus Christ, the long desired of all the nations, is the Heir to the Throne of David, the promised Redeemer, and the Divine Healer. Without Him we are still slaves of sin, moral lepers who will not inherit eternal life: "If you do not believe that I am He," He says, "you will die in your sin" ( Blessed Apostle Saint John 8:24 ).
Why is it that in these times the many do not recognize Him, even among those who call themselves Catholic? They have believed another gospel - the gospel of this world - which promises an earthly salvation only - pleasure, power and prosperity - all of which pass away like dreams in the light of day. They do not know Jesus Christ.
Let us take another look at this Divine Person Who became one of us through the Holy and Immaculate Virgin Mary, whom we rightly call the Mother of God. As we contemplate His Sacred Humanity - His perfect human nature with its noble features, its sublime wisdom and intelligence, its profound love and compassion - we are confronted with His question to Blessed Apostle Saint Peter and the Apostles: "Whom do you say that I am?" ( Blessed Apostle Saint Matthew 16:15). If our hearts are open and we are willing to cast off the burden of our sins, we reply with Peter: "Thou are the Christ, the Son of the living God" ( Blessed Apostle Saint Matthew 16:16). With Thomas we confess: "My Lord and my God!" ( Blessed Apostle Saint John 20:28 ), and with Martha, "Yes, Lord, I believe that Thou art the Christ, the Son of God, Who hast come into the world" ( Blessed Apostle Saint John 11:27 ).
"Caritas Christi urget nos," says Blessed Apostle Saint Paul, "The love of Christ impels us" ( 2 Corinthians 5:14 ). Set on fire by his faith in Christ Blessed Apostle Saint Paul spent his life preaching Christ from city to city throughout the Mediterranean area. "Him we preach," he wrote, "admonishing every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. At this, too, I work and strive, according to the power which He mightily exerts in me" ( Colossians 28,29 ).
The love of Jesus Christ is the essence of our Religion. Our acceptance of the Church's dogmatic and moral teaching, the observance of our religious duties, even a scrupulous observance of the Commandments, do us no good whatsoever if we do not have a living faith in Jesus Christ and a genuine love for Him. "For if a law had been given that could give life, justice would truly be from the Law. But the Scripture shut up all things under sin, that by the faith of Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those who believe" ( Galatians 3:21-22 ).
To lose sight of Jesus Christ is the worst tragedy that one could suffer. But many have lost touch with a living relationship with Christ and have also departed from His teachings. They may still observe the form of religion but no longer believe, or their faith is no longer Catholic. They have fallen victim to the false prophets whom Jesus said would abound in the last days.
In Jesus Christ the promises are fulfilled, says Blessed Apostle Saint Paul, that "the promise might be given to those who believe" ( Galatians 3:22 ). But the false prophets, Christian Zionists of the likes of John Hagee, have betrayed Jesus Christ, not believing with Blessed Apostle Saint Paul and with the Church, that the promises God made to Abraham are fulfilled in Him and in His Church. Instead they preach that the Jews, who are not "those who believe," are the people of God in whom the promises are yet to be fulfilled, including victory over their enemies, a rebuilt Temple, and a restored kingdom of Israel vastly larger than the present state of Israel.
Recently an amazing document called "The Jerusalem Declaration on Christian Zionism" was released by the Catholic Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Michael Sabbah, together with the Syrian Orthodox Patriarch, the Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Jerusalem and the Middle East, and the Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land. Their message speaks of Christian Zionism and its relationship with Jewish Zionism:
-
"Christian Zionism is a modern theological and political movement that embraces the most extreme ideological positions of Zionism, thereby becoming detrimental to a just peace within Palestine and Israel. The Christian Zionist program provides a worldview where the Gospel is identified with the ideology of empire, colonialism and militarism. In its extreme form, it places an emphasis on apocalyptic events leading to the end of history rather than living Christ's love and justice today.
-
"We categorically reject Christian Zionist doctrines as false teaching that corrupts the biblical message of love, justice and reconciliation. We further reject the contemporary alliance of Christian Zionist leaders and organizations with elements in the governments of Israel and the United States that are presently imposing their unilateral preemptive borders and domination over Palestine. This inevitably leads to unending cycles of violence that undermine the security of all peoples of the Middle East and the rest of the world. We reject the teachings of Christian Zionism that facilitate and support these policies as they advance racial exclusivity and perpetual war rather than the gospel of universal love, redemption and reconciliation taught by Jesus Christ" ( Jerusalem, Aug. 30, 2006, Zenit.org ).
Our Lord Jesus Christ must no longer be denied His rightful place as King of all nations and peoples. Only then will wars cease and true peace come to our broken world. "For, as Blessed Apostle Saint Paul says, "the promises of God all find their 'Yes' in Him
" ( 2 Corinthians 1:20 ). "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature. For in Him were created all things in the heavens and on the earth, things visible and things invisible
For it has pleased God the Father that in Him all His fullness should dwell, and that through Him He should reconcile to Himself all things, whether on the earth or in the heavens, making peace through the blood of His cross" ( Colossians 1:15,16a,19,20 ).
"Grace be with all those who have a love unfailing for our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen." ( Ephesians 6:24 ).
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

PREFACE FOR THE MOST HOLY TRINITY

|
It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, ever-lasting God: Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, are one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out with one voice saying: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY...

O Lord our God, we pray Thee that Thou suffer not to succumb to human hazards those whom Thou hast been pleased to make sharers of divine mysteries, through our Lord Jesus Christ.
