The four horsemen of the Apocalypse are described in just eight verses of the book of Revelation, which is the last book in the bible. The four horsemen appear when the Lamb (Jesus) opens the first four seals of a scroll with seven seals (which is described in Revelation chapter 6).
As each of the first four seals are opened a different coloured horse and its rider is seen by the apostle John as described in Rev 6:1-8.
First seal is opened : a white horse appears, its rider held a bow (conquest).
(Rev 6:1-8 NIV) I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, "Come!" {2} I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.
Second seal is opened : a red horse appears, its rider holds a sword (war)
{3} When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, "Come!" {4} Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make men slay each other. To him was given a large sword.
Third seal is opened: a black horse appears, its rider holds a pair of scales (famine)
{5} When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. {6} Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!"
Fourth seal is opened : a pale horse appears, its rider is called Death
{7} When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, "Come!" {8} I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.
The seven seals (6:1) 2.1. First seal (6:1) a white horse, its rider holds a bow 2.2. Second seal (6:3) a red horse, its rider holds a sword 2.3. Third seal (6:5) a black horse, its rider holds a pair of scales 2.4. Fourth seal (6:7) a pale horse, its rider is called Death In Revelation chapter 4 we see God seated on the throne in heaven, it is he who is sovereign over earthly events. We should notice first that only the Lamb (Jesus) is able to take the scroll from God and to break the seals and reveal its contents.
Each of the four riders is summoned onto human history by one of the heavenly living creatures. Notice the phase 'he was given a crown', 'was given power', 'do not damage the oil and the wine', 'were given power over', all of this indicates that the four riders are under the sovereignty of God.
Even if we do not understand earthly events, the message of Revelation is that God is sovereign from the start to the finish. Then his enemies will be defeated and punished and his saints vindicated and rewarded. Followed by a new earth with no more death or mourning or crying or pain.

When? And do you believe it has been worse since then than any other time in human history?
That is one of the criteria I look for. Until it gets worse than WWII, I don’t see a red horse anywhere. Obesity is still a problem in a LOT of the world so I am not seeing famine yet. Likewise with disease. People are “afraid”, but we have not had a significant pandemic in my lifetime, just breakouts here and there.
Don’t get me wrong, I suspect the seals will be open quite soon, but I am just not seeing evidence that it has actually happened yet.
What happened after the next 3 seals?
Does a “rosy” complexion denote good health while “green or pale” colors indicate illness? Well, according to some of the researchers at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, there is some truth in this.

Rosy complexion is a sign of good health. But all of us are aware that when you get ill, your complexion turns pale and sallow. Lead researcher Ian Stephen worked with the University’s Perception Lab to determine how healthy looks are linked to face color.
Our skin color is associated with the blood flow and oxygenation in it. Oxygenated blood is bright red in color and deoxygenated blood is a slight bluish-red. Researchers at the University tried to measure how the skin color varies according to the amount of oxygen present in the blood.
Parents talking on the internet forums have expressed some concern about the H1N1 vaccine that will be offered to children and adults with underlying health conditions and pregnant women as priorities.

I don't recall anything in Revelations that hinted that these all happened on the same day, perhaps they are spread out over Millennia.... A thousand years as one day
Maybe there is a 5th horseman with hostess twinkies in his hand and he rides upon a virtual, x-box 360 horse... and he is the horse of obesity.

I'll give it a stab. The first pale horse with the rider and bow (without arrows) bent on conquest — the Islamic Jihadists. Bent on conquest, without weapons, but able to “think outside the box” and turn peaceful items (airplanes, crude roadside bombs) into a means of terror and conquest.
The second rider on the red horse can take peace from the world — America's response to the Jihadists.
The dark horse and rider with scale — all the corruption in the world caused an economic meltdown, inflation is heating up. Costs rose last year due to the oil costs. Corn used for fuel and people were starving around the world.
The sickly pale horse, a disease that takes 1/4 of the population. Perhaps the H1N1 outbreak and hits the vulnerable pregnant women, young people. Many populations are made up predominantly of those under 40, as wars and famine have taken those born before 1969.
I listened to a Messianic Jewish Rabbi the other day who feels that the Church will go through the plagues with protection for those who are covered by the blood of Jesus just like the Jews in Egypt were in Egypt for the seven plagues, based on the principle of types and shadows.
Bottom line is NOW IS THE TIME TO GET YOUR HOUSE IN ORDER. It could come down pretty quickly now that Israel is reestablished, the dry bones have been resurrected and brought back to the land.
What an exhilarating time to be alive. Look up for redemption is nigh. Oohrah!

GOD does not work on our understanding of *Time* but we can
know that *Time* and *Season* by scripture and IMO the Season is now and the generation (Us) to witness the return of our LORD and Saviour Jesus Christ!

You know, what’s really interesting is that Ahmadinijad (apologies for misspelling) wanted Islam to be the one to kick off the return and by jiminy, he did!!!! He thought HE would be the hand to rule the world. Yeah, right! He’ll be seeing a hand and soon enough.

I don’t believe the first one has been opened.
I believe we are still in the ‘birth pangs’ prior to The Great Tribulation.
Based on the fifth seal, I beleive the first four occur between the ascention of Christ and the fifth seal. When the fifth seal opens, we see martyred believers who are asking “how long?”. If the first four seals were within the great tribulation period, then they would have rejoiced rather than ask “how Long?”
Will have to ponder that.

Well, one way people can know that the fourth seal has been opened — is — when they see 1.7 Billion people killed on this earth, as it says...

So, when people see those 1.7 Billion people killed, then they’ll know...
HOWEVER, people would be advised to first wait for the “third seal” to be opened, before looking for the fourth seal to be opened... :-)

When people see that, then they might be looking for the fourth seal afterwards.
BUT, I prefer not to be “left behind” in the coming Rapture of those who are in Christ — so that I don’t have to see any of those things happening on earth. I’m looking forward to being caught up with Christ, so that God proceeds on those last 7 years as spoken about in Daniel.
