This is presented as if it is an obscure story that few people would have heard of. Not only is Our Lady of Guadelupe very well known in Latin America and to non-Hispanic US Catholics, but I recall seeing a reproduction of her image in a church in Vienna.

I don't know why they never call Juan Diego by his full name, Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin.

The virgin is also sometimes seen here in the Philippines.

In Catholic culture, Diego is seen as a peasant...but in some ancient Mexican writings, he is an Aztec of princely blood.
