We know, all right; we were the ones who developed the doctrine. But I have run across many people, well meaning Christians who believe that God the Father is a distant overlord and in charge of all of creation; Jesus is His successor and a buddy who has come to save us; and the Holy Spirit is a messenger boy who does the bidding of the Father and the Son. Or some variation on that.
Great Church Fathers like Origen and Tertullian were turned away in disgrace because they could not or would not accept the Trinity at least in part as defined by the Church.
