Women could soon join Swiss Guard

The head of the all-male Swiss Guard who defend the pope said Wednesday that women could be recruited to the elite force.

The comment was made by Swiss Guard commander, Colonel Daniel Anrig, as the latest 32 recruits were sworn in.

"That could be possible," said Anrig in a television interview when asked about women joining. "Personally, I can see them accomplishing certain tasks."

Cohabitation in the Vatican's barracks might present some problems, but every problem had a solution, he added.

Anrig's predecessor, Colonel Elmar Moeder, who he replaced in August, categorically rejected the idea back in 2004.

The Swiss Guard, a force of just 110 soldiers, are responsible for the pope's personal protection, while gendarmes take care of security inside the Vatican City.

All recruits are required to be Swiss citizens, good Catholics, single -- except for officers -- and of good character.

Yes. It will be interesting to see if they drop the standards to accomodate female recruits.

I don't see a problem with this, though the uniforms aren't as sexy as the pale-blue jumpsuit I saw on the Swiss Miss (compete with ponytails and collapsible-stock H&K 93) at Zürich International ten years ago.

(Her image is still etched in my brain--and I was so dumbstruck I didn't even get a picture).

If these women who join the "Guard" are truly Swiss women...the I predict a good many more priests will choose "alternate" lifestyles!!

Swiss women tend to be very good looking!

I want to join the Swiss Guard too!

Never mind that I’m not Swiss.
Nor tall enough.
Nor that my bishop would be none too happy if I said I was leaving seminary for two years to join....

actually they could use women for certain duties...including searching women or arresting women suspects or as plainclothes cops.

In the past, the vatican guard was a semi army but now it’s mainly into policing, security and intelligence work, all of which can be done by women.
