If a man with summer tires gets caught in snow and ice, and becomes stuck, he will sometimes gun the engine, thinking that ever more of the same will get him free.
What he’s really doing is warming the ice enough to make it even more slippery, and his situation only gets worse. In other words, he is lying to himself and suffering the further pains of his own self-deception.
Only when he admits he is stuck and steps out of his own errors to seek help from the sure-footed (a 4x4 tow truck known as the Church founded by Christ) can he escape the consequences of his own misfortunate mistakes.
