Southern Baptist Convention's Richard Land Praises Obama Family Values (DAN GILGOFF)
US NEWS & WORLD REPORT BLOGGERS (DAN GILGOFF) ^ | April 2, 2009 | Dan Gilgoff

I spoke today with Richard Land, public policy chief of the Southern Baptist Convention—the nation's largest evangelical denomination—and was struck by his praise of President Obama for living out "family values":

Not enough religious conservatives are saying this: It's terribly important that [Obama] gives every indication of being a moral man who is demonstrably fond of his wife and children. I think that's important in a president, be it a Democrat or a Republican. That's why I said I couldn't vote for Giuliani or Gingrich. I think [Obama's] making a real difference in this country in his example as a model father and husband.

Perfect example of how the socialists divide and conquer and we play right along.

Being a positive role model is an important aspect of the Presidency. Separating words from actions, and appearances from reality, though, is an important aspect of leadership in a purportedly Christian organization. I know this statement was likely tossing a bone to the media, in order to come across as not entirely condemning the man. But it really rubs me the wrong way.

If all those “butts” in those “seats” are being fed pabulum, are they being brought to the Lord? They’re tithing. They’re listening to soft moralizing that is loosely linked to the Bible. They’re listening to “praise music” modeled after contemporary pop tunes. What else?

I agree but IMO we must remember how our enemy is and not eat our own.

There seems to be two approaches. One that insists we must be fair and give credit when he does something right. The other is that we must condemn the entire person.

You’re talking through ignorance, putting all churches in the same category. Praise for the Lord does not have to follow a formula, it just has to follow the Word.

Praising God can be fun and exciting for the unchurched. It also makes it a heck of a lot easier to attract those who are not saved. And that is the mission Jesus set before us.

I’m going to let that comment about talking through ignorance go, and just ask you: how much do you cast aside, and how many concessions to worldliness do you make, in order to draw a crowd?

I’ve prayed for Obama, that the Lord open his eyes, that he be changed. I’ve defended Pat Robertson when nobody else would do anything but call him a nut, for trying to find the positive in Obama, and trying to encourage him into a Godly direction. But, looking for reasons to praise him pertaining to family, when he advocates postpartum infanticide, is more than I can stomach.

“I’m going to let that comment about talking through ignorance go,”

Why, either you are correct that each and every church that uses modern music is failing to teach Gods word or you are wrong. Its my view that you are wrong. The boring, dusty church singing 100 year old songs and the same old dusty sermons is no closer to God just because its old and boring. In my view they have done more to chase souls away than anything else.

“how much do you cast aside, and how many concessions to worldliness do you make, in order to draw a crowd?”

You don’t need to cast anything aside. You just need to communicate it in a new way that they can understand. Jesus went out among the unsaved, he did not expect them to come to him.

Dr. Land is solidly conservative. I know him personally. This is quote, by its lack of context, is blatant misquote.

been co-opted.

I cannot stand to watch him or hear him speak. I think he is selling out our country and our culture. I agree with the other poster who thinks the writer took the comments out of context.

Please put it into the proper context, then. It would be a great relief.

“But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7

He’s looking at the slick, magazine package that is always being presented.

It is a sad truth that many churches seek the approval of man rather than God. It is more important to be popular than to be right. God does indeed look at our hearts, and where our hearts are, there is our treasure.

Jesus didn’t tell Peter that everyone would be Saints. He told him that the gates of hell shall not prevail against the Church.

The context was not provided by the article. That is the problem. But imagine, in the midst of multiple critical statements, you make a statement that is complementary in order to present balance - that is quoting out of context, which is in essence a misquote. Suffice it to say, Dr. Land has been, and remains one of the most consistent standard-bearers for conservativism. He has not be "obamized."
