No, of course not. Jesus used symbology to get points across. So to understand the symbols, you need to look at context. Context involves looking at who is talking and to whom. Context involves comparing the words to the rest of the book and the rest of the Bible.

I take the Bible very seriously. I believe that when questions arise on Bible doctrines, you should weigh all of the evidences and side with the one that carries the most weight. I used to be on the "eternal punishing" side, but after looking closer at things like the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, I am not convinced that is the correct understanding of eternity for unbelievers.

If you don't buy the points presented, that's fine. However, it is required of all Christians to study the Scriptures for understanding. If all you are doing is sticking with what you've been told without doing the studying and questioning yourself, you are not doing what is required of you as a Christian.

I think it is deeper than that. Otherwise, you would have gouged out your eye and cut off your hand by now. And the apostles whould have done the same thing.
