From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him, "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."
(John 6:66-69)
Jesus had preached a sermon so demanding and so hard that people were evacuating His audience in droves. Jesus knew even His own disciples were contemplating abandoning ship. Jesus pierced their hearts with an arrow when He queried, "Do you want to leave also?" Leave it to Peter! Peter cut to the chase and summarized the entire problem by asking, "Lord, to whom shall we go?" My, my, my, what a question! He could have easily asked, "Lord, when shall we go?" Speculation about dates, times and seasons fascinates us. Peter knew that in the company of Jesus all possible endings or eventualities would be divinely and perfectly handled. Peter could have asked, "Lord, where shall we go?" Peter also knew that "where" doesn't make any difference if Jesus is there!
I remember my own home when I was just a boy. I can remember many things about the house, but what made the house wasn't the carpet or the rooms; it was the presence of Mom and Dad. I'm humbled when my wife and family infer they would move anywhere, as long as I would be there. Christ is the centerpiece of Heaven. Going to Heaven is not going to a place; it is going to a person. Peter didn't ask, "Lord, when shall we go?" or "Where shall we go?" He asked the Lord, "To whom shall we go?" Who else has the words of eternal life? Who else can save us? Who else has power over sin and death?
Interestingly put, quite accurate as well.
Maybe I should start practicing answering questions with questions...
Amen.
eternally one in Christ embraces all existence, all realities as all are in His realm..
Father make them one in me as I am one in you..what a prayer, thank you Lord!!
