Yesterday, I attended the dedication of the LDS temple in Draper. As I was sitting, waiting for it to start, I thought of the open house that had preceded the dedication, and of the several temple open houses in other U.S. cities that I had volunteered to help with, and how we worked darn hard to get media coverage and non-Mormons to attend.
Then it occurred to me that it's a tad unreasonable to strain to get as many non-Mormons as possible to walk through the temple and see the altars and all and not expect them to be curious about the secret rituals that occur there. It's like saying to a kid: "Now, Billy, while I'm gone don't take a kitchen chair and climb up on the counter and get the jar of jelly beans from the back of the top shelf and stuff the beans up your nose."
By making the temple ceremony secret and then highlighting it's secrecy in open houses and other public relations activities, we Mormons help increase the gentile's curiosity and make possible things like HBO's "Big Love" episode. And then we get mad when it happens and blame everyone but ourselves.
This Rex Chandler fellow seems like the reasonable sort.
i toured the mesa, az temple after it was redone. interesting. i was a kid, but it did lead to questions.
There are ways to understand, if a person wants to.
If they do not want to understand there is much misleading information for them to cling to.
