So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time?
(Matthew 24:44-45)
Once upon a time, a man shipwrecked on a desolate island. As he staggered ashore, he was met by a group of natives. Expecting to be killed, he was shocked when the natives expressed to him that he was a very lucky man. They had a rule on this particular island that if any one landed on this shore on this one day of the year, he would be king of the island for one full year. He would be king and the island's entire population would be his servants. They also made it clear to him that at the end of the year, he would be put out to sea on a makeshift raft and set adrift.
The man thought and thought. He could spend the year living a life of comfort and ease. He could have his every whim granted. Or he could use the year as a time of preparation for the time of departure. He wisely chose the latter. He had the men of the island cut trees and fashion a large boat. He had the natives gather fruit and foods and store them on his new vessel. He worked diligently for the entire year. Exactly one year to the day after his arrival, he went to the water's edge unafraid and well prepared. He had not frittered away his year of opportunity. He had absolutely no regrets. You and I have a certain but unknown time on this planet. We can waste our lives living for ourselves, or we can live for Christ and for others and thus be prepared when the day of our departure arrives.
Thanks for the post. With all the madness around us, it’s good to be reminded to keep our priorities straight.
