How is it that Socialists are so attracted to the Catholic church that they want to be leaders in it, to the extent of spending a lifetime with it? Also, how is it that in strongly Catholic countries, socialism is so strong, versus capitalism (think all of Latin America, Spain, etc.)? Countries that have Catholicism as their official religion are the worst.

I am Catholic myself and I know Church doctrine as well as anyone.
I remind you that Pope John Paul and Reagan and Thatcher all joined forces to help free Poland and destroy the USSR.
My problem is that liberal Ministers, in the Catholic, Anglican and Methodist churches are often socialists.
And, those Priests and Ministers are violating sound doctrine, when they push Socialism.
I do grieve about the errors that religious leaders make, but -— they are not speaking for me or my Church when they are in error.
Socialists wish to control, compromise, or nullify all institutions that have the potential of standing against them.
Vatican City is the only country that has Catholicism as the official (only) religion.
Perhaps you meant countries that have Catholicism as their state religion. This is where the religion is government-sanctioned, but is not the only religion allowed. These are:
Argentina, Costa Rica, Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco and parts of Switzerland.
And yes, those Liechtensteinians are a dangerous group.
