JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A new translation of the Roman Catholic Mass that is to be introduced worldwide in a few years is getting an accidental trial run in South Africa, where some parishioners are complaining it's too hard to understand.
The controversy comes as Pope Benedict XVI travels Tuesday to Cameroon on his first papal pilgrimage to the continent that has the fastest growing congregation of Catholics.
Critics say the new, more literal word-for-word translation is part of an attempt to roll back the progress made decades ago when the church halted its insistence on Latin.
In a misunderstanding, some South African church leaders started using the new version prematurely in some parishes, even though the English-language prayers won't be approved for global use for at least a couple of years. But instead of pulling back in the face of their mistake, they are continuing to use the liturgy.
Distribution of the prayers has fueled debate over whether the new translation — meant to more closely follow the original Latin text — will help deepen parishioners' prayer life or alienate them from the church.
"I think the church has been very lucky that the South Africans jumped the gun because it's showing the Vatican that there is going to be a worldwide problem when these new translations are put into effect," said Thomas Reese, a Jesuit priest and senior fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University.
"Once again the Vatican isn't listening to the critics, and we're going to have another major embarrassment to the pope when these translations are put into effect and are forced on the people in the pews," he said.

Given this fact - WHICH IS NEVER MENTIONED IN THE PRESS - and certainly not in "The Associated Press" (a major player in the OBAMA-MEDIA), shouldn't everyone take with a grain of salt Reese's endless carping against the Pope and the Vatican?
And shouldn't everyone be made aware of the fact that he is a MAJOR Obama cheerleader?

Someone really ought to point out on FOX or somewhere, that this Reese is only the Left-wing Obama-media's spokesman on "All Things Catholic" - and almost ALWAYS dissents from Church teaching - apparently with understandable personal motivation, given his firing from AMERICA.

Well, they do mention that he is a Jesuit and that has to raise a couple “red flags”.
Vatican II, the 1962-1965 meetings that inspired liberalizing reforms of the Roman Catholic Church, led to changes such as Mass being celebrated in local languages. Reese said prior to that, Mass was said in Latin and parishioners followed along in a missile that had an English translation.
Meetings? Reese said? Reese said Mass was said? What is the comma doing after "that"?
Under Vatican II, the breast-beating was abandoned and people pronounced only once on grievous sinning.
There is something strangely adolescent about this phrase. It is also inaccurate: the symbolic striking of the breast is often done in Novus Ordo Mass, while "grievous" is not said: "I have sinned through my own fault (strike breast once) in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and what I have failed to do".
It should not be surprising that the semiliterate who write like this will find the new translation difficult.

Now you are nit-picking.
I have read a rough copy of the translation and I think it sounds better than the current water downed mass. I think people are just intellectually lazy and do not want to take the time to understand it.
Is there a link to the rough copy of the translation?
The 1962 Latin Missal can be purchased brand new on amazon.com. It’s used in Latin Masses that are currently being said as we speak.
Although the Latin Missal is available on Amazon, I doubt that a similar missile is also available.

Are you referring to the new missal which hasn’t be officially released? I wasn’t.
But I might add that the 1962 missal is a translation from the Latin (Duaye-Rheims) That translation is still excellent and should be brought back. We need better instruction not dumbing down. The 1962 missal also has a wealth of information that is useful to one’s soul.

The reference is to the Missal, not the bible. Granted, so very much of the Missal is taken directly from the bible, but they are not identical. Of course, even the non-bibical portions of Pope Gregory’s 5th-century Latin text was largely based on older Greek texts.
