Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
(I Timothy 6:17)
Jesus had more to say about money than He said about Heaven and hell put together. Money is the second most talked about subject in the Bible. Nearly one half of his 37 parables are about stewardship and money. One out of every six verses in the Gospels is about money so, if God wants us to talk about anything, He wants us to talk about this. Why did He talk about money so often? Not to get money for Himself. He never took up a collection, never passed the plate that we know of. The only possession He owned was a robe that He wore.
Jesus talked about money because He knew money was the heart's biggest competitor. Jesus wanted man to serve Him with the same intensity that He displays everyday when He rises and goes to work and labors all day just to earn some money. He knew that money would make us shortsighted and cause us to think there is nothing else in life that matters. It is very easy and almost natural to make ministering to our physical needs and desires paramount. The long history of mankind proves that when we put money first and make it our god, we will always end up disillusioned and filled with failure and gross disappointment. Here is a truth which no age has ever needed more: When we give our lives to material acquisitions, we eventually discover that the things it buys or life itself is not worth having.
