But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 6:22-23)
We sometimes start believing that because everything else in our culture has changed, maybe God has changed. Maybe the Bible has changed. Truth is: nothing important has changed. The wages of sin is exactly the same today as it was in the Garden of Eden. That is death. Sin still pays off in the same wages. No discounts. The cost of a lie will still cost you someone's trust. Unchecked, it will lead you to the same end as Ananias and Sapphira. No radical change in culture can lessen the cost of a lie. The cost of jealousy is still the same. It will gnaw on you like a cancer. Unchecked, it will lead you to the same action when Cain killed his brother Abel. Cheating and lust will still cost you the same. There are no bigger sins.
There may be more sinners but there are no new sins. Death, Heaven, hell, eternity and the Bible are still the same. Sin will make you pay your wage whether you live in the ritzy section of town or the slums. Preachers may change. Creeds may change. The culture in which we live may change. Styles and fashions may change, but Jesus and His Word never change. Sin slaves, but Christ saves. Please, dear heart, don't get to thinking that maybe, just maybe God and Christ have changed since there is so much change everywhere around us. The Old Testament closes with these words of Malachi: "I, the Lord, do not change"
(Malachi 3:6).
