"This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many, " he said to them. "I tell you the truth, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God."
(Mark 14:24-25)
Jimmy Davis, the former Governor of Louisiana, used to sing an old country western hit, "Come home. Come home. It's supper time." The gist of the song is recalling the days of his youth, when evening would come and the shadows were lengthening fast and his mother would step out on the back steps and call, "Come home, come home, it's supper time." All of us can remember the deep emotions of being called at supper time. There is something quite extraordinary about this simple ceremony: sitting around a table at the end of the day, with those we love and who love us. We know this meal will satisfy and provide all of our needs for the rest of that day. It signals we are gravitating toward the end of the day's journey and that we have been taken good care of. Then the songwriter says as wonderful as that childhood experience was, it will be far greater to come to the end of life's journey to hear Jesus step from the Portals of Glory and call,
"Come home. Come home. It's supper time."
Jesus used this same metaphor when describing the Lord's Supper. In Mark 14:25, Jesus promised His disciples that He would share this supper with them in the next world. What a scene! Who can imagine the pathos and splendor of that supper time? The big question is, are you ready? Are you prepared? Are you anticipating this grand reunion? It may be tomorrow but it may be today!
It’s a metaphor for “coming home” to the Lord at the end of your “day”. I loved this song as a child. Still do.
