For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we areyet was without sin.
(Hebrews 4:15)
Jesus, in His final hours of passion leading up to His death, suffered every known kind of pain: physical, mental and spiritual. No other could suffer nor has suffered as He did. In the realm of bodily pain there are five types of suffering:
1. Concussion - caused by being violently hit or beaten by a bloodthirsty mob.
2. Laceration - when the flesh is cut and torn, such as thongs at the end of the scourging whip.
3. Penetration - when the skin and joints are opened by sharp piercings; this describes the thorns that punctured and pierced His sinless brow.
4. Perforation - when holes are opened by the pressure from external objects; great spikes were driven through His holy hands and feet.
5. Incision - when cuts are made into the skin and muscles; the sharp spear not only penetrated His side but also sliced it open until both water and blood flowed out of His body.
Jesus suffered all five of these physical wounds. Strange as it may seem, His bodily suffering was the least painful. It was His mental anguish that shook Jesus to His inner depths. Jesus suffered loneliness, rejection and misunderstanding. As terrible as those physical and mental wounds were, those of the spirit were worst of all. Jesus carried the combined sins of all men. They fell in and crushed Him. His spiritual heart was broken and it affected His physical heart, so that the elastic sac surrounding this organ was broken and out poured blood and water. Yes... "He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities"
(Isaiah 53:5).
A good reminder. Thanks.
He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities”
(Isaiah 53:5).
And when I think of my sins, “how heavy a burden”, I have to wonder how he has taken the sins’ of the world up on Himself?
Thanks for the post!!!
These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not one of his bones will be broken," John 19:36
