“An encouraging sign” (Stop to 'Vagina Monologues')

Jesuit Fr. Michael Engh, who took over as president of Santa Clara University on Jan. 1, has ordered the cancellation of a scheduled campus production of “The Vagina Monologues,” the Cardinal Newman Society reports. Santa Clara had hosted the play in previous years under its former president, Fr. Father Paul Locatelli, S.J., said the Newman Society.

Father Engh’s action is an encouraging sign toward renewal and he deserves the thanks and gratitude of the Catholic faithful who have been praying for an end to the Monologues on Catholic campuses for the past seven years,” said Newman Society president Patrick J. Reilly.

“There is a growing recognition by Catholic colleges that the Monologues are completely inappropriate for a Catholic institution and that there are other, more dignified ways to address issues such as human sexuality and violence against women,” said Reilly.

The Cardinal Newman Society identified two California Catholic schools among 15 in the country that will permit campus performances of “The Vagina Monologues” this year -- Saint Mary’s College of California and the University of San Francisco.

I would find it less exclusive if the title contained “Dialogues” instead of “Monologues”, myself.

About time. If it is a Catholic University, then Catholic values are what should be stressed. I don’t see this as a problem.

Eve Ensler, the author of the VM, is one smarmy b*tch who has made a fortune from this joke foisted on society.

Goof for Santa Clara. Now, if only Saint Mary's could get their act together and begin making decisions as a Catholic College. I would never donate to Saint Mary's again after Bill Ayers was allowed on Campus. And, by the sound of it, many other former supporters feel the same.

Saint Mary's and Santa Clara have always been 'rivals' of one another. Santa Clara is coming-out the winner, again.

It is even more encouraging that a Jesuit took this action...
