Boyish Bigotry at Ole Miss (Father Z)
What Does the Prayer Really Say? ^ | 03/04/2009 | Father Z

Posted on 03/05/2009 7:20:48 AM PST by bottletree

The University of Mississippi on its website bills itself as "A Great Public University".

I don’t know if they receive public funds or not.

The administration seems to tolerate anti-Catholic bigotry in a paper associated with the University.

The Daily Mississippian is a student run paper described to be both "of the University" and also "independent". Also, the web presense of the same seems to be separate to an extent from the print edition. Nevertheless, this entity is associated formally with Ole Miss. I don’t know where it gets its funding. Is any of it from tax payers?

And so we come to it. It is an old story: a young know-it-all makes a foolish spectacle of himself with his shallow considerations of the relationship of reason and faith.

The problem rests less in his lack of understanding of what he is writing about, as it does in his bigotry.

I am sure tens of people pay attention to this puppy, Caviness. Are we giving him more attention than he is due? Perhaps. Still, this is an exemplary piece.

You could use it in a classroom to underscore all manner of object lessons.....

Father Z's take (with his comments added) on a recent anti-Catholic hatchet job, I mean opinion piece, appearing in The Daily Mississippian - the student newspaper at the University of Mississippi (AKA: Ole Miss). Nice.

It could be noted that the anti-Catholic attitude is just a holdover from the Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s. The leftist grandchildren are just following in their ancestors bigoted footsteps.

In should be snidely asked whether the school administration supports a KKK-inspired student newspaper, and if so, will they approve of it turning against negro students and faculty as well?

Why does the thread direct FReepers to your MySpace page, instead of to Father Z’s article?

It seems like an attack on Christian faith in general.

Sorry for the myspace link. It’s the page of the original (Daily Mississippian) article’s author. I’ve now posted the link to the right article in a response.

“Been here three days..” - Yep, I’m a newbie.

Catholics in this forum point out quite frequently that the articles and opinions published in the Vatican newspaper is not necessarily the opinions of the Vatican itself. And rightly so.

Just because the Vatican newspaper prints an article by a Catholic astronomer claiming that there is possibly life on Mars and that that life may also be free from original sin, does not mean that the Vatican thinks so, nor does it justify the headlines “Vatican believes in life on Mars”.

In the same way just because a university newspaper prints an article clearly labeled opinion on it's opinion page, doesn't make it the position of the university.

To accuse the university or it's newspaper of the same bigotry appearing in an opinion piece is equal to saying that the Pope is a Holocaust denier because of Bishop Robertson's statements. Sadly the author of this article just doesn't get the irony in that.
