My son Anthony attends Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Normally, he avoids the on-campus Neumann Center Mass and goes to St Stanislaus' down town for the Latin Mass. Well the weather was bad, and so he and his fiancee went to the Newman Center mass. Well, it was an "interesting" mass. Not in good way either. He sent me pictures.
Apparently the priest decided to "sprinkle" water on the congregation at the begining of Mass. Well the ritual deviated from the usual sprinkling rite. First there was the ritual blessing of the super-soaker (!)
Then we had the filling of the super soaker with holy water and then the "sprinkling" of the congregation with the super soaker.
Truely if that wasn't strange enough, apparently Father's liturgical color of the day was "tie-dyed." While colorful, it less than impressed the congregation of 20 or so college students who either were laughing through out or muttering under their breath. Of course all this was proceeded by even more loony-tunes stuff:

As Anthony puts it:
It was actually worse than the pictures make it out to be. He processed into mass behind the cross wearing the Mickey Mouse hat and a gold masquerade mask. Once the singing stopped, the first thing he did was blow a kazoo and say, "Happy Mardi Gras."
If you are still looking for lenten prayer intentions ... PLEASE PRAY for the Catholics in the the Diocese of Rochester. And pray for the conversion of heart of their Bishop, Matthew Clark, as well as the priests and religious who serve the diocese.
People up north don’t get Mardi Gras.
Tsk, tsk. Priest on drugs.
(jaw dropping on floor)
Thats about the most disrespectful display that I’ve seen since the cross-in-the-urine.
Unbelievable.
Wow! I am speechless! I am not Catholic but I have great respect for the Catholic church, I attended Catholic school as a child and it is my area of research.
However, it seems we mostly see these “rogue” priests and I am wondering why +BXVI isn’t cracking down more on them. It grieves me to see someone like this priest or the priest from St. Mary’s in Australia denigrate sacred practices.
Mickey Mouse hat, indeed! *shudder*
It sounds like you should keep this “priest” away from the alter boys, or any other young men in the congregation.
I watched a Maronite Mass on YouTube the other day. Fortunately, it was just the opposite of this as far as reverence goes.

celebrants for the Mass at the Newman Center.
So there was absolutely no reference at all to Mickey Mouse? That’s entirely the characterization of the author?
I’m a cranky New Englander - and all I know about Mardi Gras is that it’s held in the sh^thole that is America’s 3rd world city (yes, New Orleans) and involves lots of drunks fighting and urinating everywhere, and slutty women and depraved men exposing themselves (I saw it once, unfortunately)
Oh, thank you for your prayers! We need them here in the Rochester diocese.
check this out.
I having a hard time buying this story. We’re not this messed up are we?
I am tempted to cry.
The man is a witness to self-loathing and indifference toward the Lord.
This ought have nothing to do with Mardi Gras.
The frivolities of the traditional "Mardi Gras" celebration have no place in the liturgical celebration of Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday) or any other day of the year.
The People of God always have the right to a Mass that is both valid and licit. Though likely valid, this Mass was certainly not licit.
And folks still are heard to say
“There is not an emergency in the Church.”
“The People of God always have the right to a Mass that is both valid and licit. Though likely valid, this Mass was certainly not licit. “
Not licit?
This is pure, unadulterated sacrilege; and the padre looks old enough to know better.
That said. I would say that “likely valid” would be more accurately stated as “possibly valid”.
There IS no liturgical observance of “Shrove Tuesday.” Ash Wednesday is not a feast. There is no “vigil” of Ash Wednesday.
This priest needs to be taken out and shot. There is no cure for what’s wrong with him.
