Do we see children as precious gifts, to be cared for the best way we can? Do we see them as unique individuals created in Gods image, to be raised as best suits their own capabilities? Or do we see children as extensions of ourselves? Do we see a child as though he or she were still in the womb − part of the mothers body? Do we see a child the way we see a finger or a toe, an appendage meant to serve our needs and desires, but with no independent existence of its own? Do we see a child the way we see a wart, a bothersome and unnecessary part of us that can be left or removed at our convenience? Do we see children as property which can be bought and sold − that is, increased or decreased − as the owner wishes? Do we see children as objects to gratify our lust for power − ultimately, the God-like power to create life or destroy it?

In our newspaper, the octuplet story ran side-by-side with the story of the FL abortion clinic that put the live-born baby in a garbage bag and threw it in the dumpster.
All I could think was - mess around with creation and destruction of life and a demeaning freak-show will be the result.
Freak show is the perfect word.
These people continue with the children out of wedlock, destructive parental relationships, and general disregard for the well being of anyone let alone their children.
I have a large family, I support large families. These stories make it harder for me to have a blanket support for large families. I find myself having to qualify my support buy saying it has to be done the right way.
The keyword in your post is “family.” An unmarried woman with children isn’t really a complete family since a family requires a husband and father.
I don’t think that society is under any obligation whatsoever to support the mother of these octuplets. If it turns out that she can’t support her children, then the state should take them away from her because children aren’t puppies or possessions. They are human beings who are entitled to a mother and a father.
I came from a large family also, and I support people who want to have large families.
My point is, science is giving people the chance to “play God” and create or destroy life based on whim, societal pressure, etc. etc.. It is a pandora’s box and we should not be surprised at the horrific examples we see.
