General Intercessions

That the Catholic Church in the East and the Catholic Church in the West
may persevere in seeking the unity willed for her by Christ,
from whom the whole Body is joined and knit together
to be built up in charity ( Ephesíans 4:16 ),
to the Lord we pray, Christ, hear us. R. Christ, graciously hear us.

That missionary zeal will conquer the world for Christ.,
to the Lord we pray, Christ , hear us. R. Christ, graciously hear us.

That the thoughts of the powerful of the earth may be turned from war and opened to the making of peace,
to the Lord we pray, Christ, hear us. R. Christ, graciously hear us.

That those who journey in darkness may be given friends and companions to lead them by the hand;
and that those whose hearts are hardened against Christ and His Church
may be touched by an inbreaking of grace,
to the Lord we pray, Christ, hear us. R. Christ, graciously hear us.

That we who partake of these Holy Mysteries may be illumined by the same light
that blazed before the eyes of Saint Paul on the road to Damascus,
and, like him, live by faith in the Son of God
who loved us and gave himself up for us ( Galatians 2:20 ),
to the Lord we pray, Christ, hear us. R. Christ, graciously hear us.

"Let it not be as a murderer or a thief, a malefactor or a coveter of other men's goods that any of you suffer; but if it is for the name of Christian, let him be not ashamed, but glorify God in that name." --- Blessed Apostle Saint Peter ( First Epistle 4:15-16 )

† FEAST OF THE CONVERSION OF
BLESSED APOSTLE SAINT PAUL †

Conversion is the heart of the Christian experience. Conversion is best described in the New Testament in the Letters of Blessed Apostle Saint Paul, and with good reason - no one experienced a more dramatic conversion than Blessed Apostle Saint Paul on the road to Damascus!

As recorded in the Gospel of Mark, it was Jesus who commanded conversion when he announced "the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel" ( Blessed Apostle Saint Mark 1:15 ).

The Bible is filled with figures who sinned, became repentant, and underwent conversion, such as Blessed Apostle Saint Peter, Blessed Apostle Saint Paul, and Blessed Apostle Saint Mary Magdalene. Blessed Apostle Saint Peter denied three times that he was an Apostle of Christ during the Lord's Passion; when the cock crowed, he went out and "wept bitterly" ( Blessed Apostle Saint Matthew 26:75 ). Following the Ascension, Jesus told him to "feed my lambs" ( Blessed Apostle Saint John 21:15). Saul, the persecutor of the Church, became Blessed Apostle Saint Paul, the great missionary to the Gentiles, following his conversion. Blessed Apostle Saint Mary Magdalene was a woman of ill repute before Jesus drove out seven devils from her ( Blessed Apostle Saint Luke 8:2 ); she became an ardent follower, and Jesus chose her to be the first to see Him following his resurrection ( Blessed Apostle Saint John 20:11-18 ).

Saint Augustine describes his own conversion in his Confessions ( Book 8, Chapter 12 ) while reading Blessed Apostle Saint Paul's Letter to the Romans: "But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and as for the flesh, take no thought of it for its lusts" ( Romans 13:14 ).

Saint Thomas Aquinas, in his discussion of grace in the Summa Theologica, describes Blessed Apostle Saint Paul's own conversion as a sudden reception of grace ( in contrast to the gradual transformation over time ) as "Blessed Apostle Saint Paul, suddenly when he was in the midst of sin, his heart was perfectly moved by God."

This paper will examine Blessed Apostle Saint Paul's own experience and then his Letters in the New Testament to appreciate his theology of conversion and grace.

THE CONVERSION OF PAUL

Blessed Apostle Saint Paul briefly refers to his own conversion experience in only four places in but two of his Letters. In 1 Corinthians 9:1, Blessed Apostle Saint Paul asks an emphatic question, "Have I not seen Jesus our Lord" Later in the letter, Blessed Apostle Saint Paul is describing the Gospel teaching that Jesus died for our sins, was raised on the third day, and began appearing to the Apostles; in 1 Corinthians 15:8-9, he relates, "Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the Apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God."

He writes in Galatians 1:11-12 that "the Gospel preached by me is not of human origin. For I did not receive it from a human being, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ." He adds in Galatians 1:15-16, "When he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach Him among the Gentiles."

But it is in the Acts of the Apostles, written by his fellow worker Blessed Apostle Saint Luke, where the description of Blessed Apostle Saint Paul's conversion is most complete. Blessed Apostle Saint Luke was Blessed Apostle Saint Paul's frequent companion, and reflected Blessed Apostle Saint Paul, who saw the risen Christ. Blessed Apostle Saint Paul calls Blessed Apostle Saint Luke "the beloved physician" in Colossians 4:14, advises Blessed Apostle Saint Timothy that "only Blessed Apostle Saint Luke is with me" in 2 Blessed Apostle Saint Timothy 4:11, and that Blessed Apostle Saint Luke is his "fellow worker" in Philemon 24. We also know that Blessed Apostle Saint Luke accompanied Blessed Apostle Saint Paul on his second, third, and fourth missionary journeys from the "we" passages in Acts 16:10-17, 20:5-15, 21:1-18, and 27:1 to 28:16. Blessed Apostle Saint Paul's conversion is recorded in Acts 9:1-28, and Blessed Apostle Saint Paul relates his conversion experience to the Jews of Jerusalem in Acts 22:1-21, and to King Agrippa in Acts 26:4-23.

Saul consented to the execution of Blessed Apostle Saint Stephen, and had been persecuting the Church in Jerusalem before he was traveling the road to Damascus to do the same:

"Now as he journeyed he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed about him.
And he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him,

"Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" And he said, "Who are you, Lord?"
And he said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting;
but rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do." ~~ Acts of the Apostles 9:3-6

Notice that Jesus identifies himself with his Church! In Damascus, Jesus appeared to Ananias and tells him that Saul "is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before Gentiles, kings, and Israelites ( Acts 9:15 ). Ananias laid his hands on Saul and his vision was restored, and Ananias baptized him.

Blessed Apostle Saint Paul reports his mission and purpose given by Jesus before King Agrippa:

And I said, "Who are you, Lord?" And the Lord said,
"I am Jesus whom you are persecuting.
But rise and stand on your feet; for I appeared to you for this purpose,
to appoint you to serve and bear witness to the things
in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you,
delivering you from the people and from the Gentiles - to whom I send you to open their eyes,
that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God,
that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those
who are sanctified by faith in me. ~~ Acts of the Apostles 26:15-18

In essence this is Pauline soteriology - to bring salvation to mankind by proclaiming the message of Jesus, to open their eyes, to transfer them from darkness to light, from the power of Satan to God, to receive forgiveness of sins and a place among the people of God! The Gospel event of Christ communicates the reality of salvation!

In summary, Paul offers comfort and hope through faith in Jesus Christ. We live in the arena of life, the goal not yet attained, but "pressing on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus" ( Philippians 3:10-14 ).

But Blessed Apostle Saint Paul continually reminds us of the moral imperative. Stop sinning! ( 1 Corinthians 15:34 ). Galatians 5:19-21 lists the works of the flesh, "that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God" ( 5:21 ). "As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in him" (Colossians 2:6). Paul continues in Colossians to "seek what is above" (Colossians 3:1). "Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly" (3:5). "Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices, and have put on the new self, for knowledge, which is being renewed in the image of its creator (Colossians 3:9-10). Remember the day will come, at the hour of our death, when we will face judgment!

Conversion is a lifetime experience!

One of the spiritual works of mercy is to be patient with those in error. As Blessed Apostle Saint Paul exclaims in Romans 7:25, "Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord". "There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" ( 8:1 ). Thank God for the Cross of Christ and his continued mercy through the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Eucharist ( the Body of Jesus Christ!

We must have faith in Christ, hope that we accept the grace necessary to obtain salvation, and live a life of love ( 1 Corinthians 13). "The Spirit gives life" (2 Corinthians 3:6); therefore, may we all live the fruit of the Spirit, as described in Galatians 5:22-23, "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control," on our own road of conversion to Christ.

Noli vinci a malo sed vince in bono malum.

A reading from the Epistle of the blessed Apostle Paul to the Romans.

Brethren: Be not wise in your own conceits. To no man rendering evil for evil, providing good things not only in the sight of God, but also in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as is in you, have peace with all men. Revenge not yourselves, my dearly beloved, put give place unto wrath. For it is written: Revenge is mine saith the Lord. But if thy enemy be hungry, give him to eat; if he thirst, give him to drink: for doing this, thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head. Be not overcome by evil, but overcome evil by good.

EVANGELIUM ~ GOSPEL - Blessed Apostle Saint Matthaeum VIII:I-XIII ~ Matthew 8:1-13

† Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Joannem †
I n illo tempore: Cum descendisset Jesus de monte, secutae sunt eum turbae multae: et ecce leprosus véniens, adorabat eum dicens: 'Dómíne, si vis, potes, me mundare. Et extendens Jesus manum, tétigit eum, dicens: "Volo. Mundare."

† A continuation of the Holy Gospel recorded by Blessed Apostle Saint John †
A t that time, when Jesus was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him: and behold a leper came and adored Him, saying: 'Lord, if Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean.' And Jesus, stretching forth His hand, touched him, saying:"I will. Be thou made clean." And forthwith his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus saith to him: "See, thou tell no man: but go, show thyself to the priest, and offer the gift which Moses commanded for a testimony unto them." And when He had entered into Capharnaum, there came to Him a centurion, beseeching Him and saying: 'Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, and is grievously tormented.' And Jesus saith to him: "I will come and heal him."And the centurion making answer said: 'Lord, I am not worthy that Thou shouldst come under my roof; but only say the word and my servant shall be healed. For I also am a man subject to authority, having under me soldiers; and I say to this: Go, and he goeth; and to another: Come, and he cometh; and to my servant: Do this, and he doeth it.' And Jesus hearing this marveled, and said to them that followed Him: "Amen I say to you, I have not found so great faith in Israel. And I say to you, that many shall come from the east and the west, and shall sit down with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of Heaven: but the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into the exterior darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth." And Jesus said to the centurion: "Go, and as thou hast believed, so be it done to thee." And the servant was healed at the same hour.

Homily For The Third Sunday after the Epiphany
25 January 2004 Anno Domini

by Father Louis J. Campbell
"Qui legit, intelligat"
"He who readeth, let him understand"

The New Judaizers

Gone is the mission to convert the "perfidious" Jews and unbelievers for it wouldn't be politically correct. Never mind what Christ and His Apostles say, we must not upset man and the New Order!

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

ON Saturday, January 17, 2004, an event described as "historic" took place in Paul VI Hall at the Vatican. The event was a "Concert of Reconciliation," featuring the talents of three hundred Jewish, Christian and Muslim artists, including U.S. maestro Gilbert Levine conducting the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a performance of John Harbison's "Abraham". In a statement issued in November, the Vatican had explained that the concert was to take place "to promote the commitment to a peaceful coexistence among all the children of Abraham" ( Zenit.org, Jan.14, 2004 ).

It sounds good. How could one object, if it furthers the cause of peace among Jews, Christians and Muslims who all look to Abraham as their father in faith? But whom are we kidding? What faith? And who are the children of Abraham? Concerning natural generation, not all who call themselves Jews are descended from Abraham, nor are all who call themselves Muslims. And only a small minority of those who call themselves Christian can claim Abraham as their ancestor, namely, those Christians of true Jewish or Arab ancestry. Therefore on the natural level there are no grounds for calling Jews, Muslims and Christians "children of Abraham."

Are we, then, all children of Abraham in the spiritual sense? And is Judaism our "elder brother in the faith" as John Paul II calls it? Those who call Abraham their "father in faith" must have the faith of Abraham. And only those who believe in Jesus Christ, Abraham's Heir, in Whom the promises God made to Abraham were fulfilled, have such faith, and are the true children of Abraham. Others, though we must respect them as fellow human beings and pray for their conversion, are simply unbelievers.

Jesus explains in today's Gospel that the Jews who refused to receive Him as their Messiah lost their right to be called children of Abraham. Marveling at the faith of the Roman centurion, Jesus , prophesies: "I tell you that many will come from the east and from the west, and will feast with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, but the children of the kingdom will be put forth into the darkness outside…" (Blessed Apostle Saint Matthew 8:11,12 ).

Read the words of Blessed Apostle Saint Paul in Romans and Galatians. In his Epistle to the Galatians he says: "Know therefore that the men of faith are the real sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, announced to Abraham beforehand, 'In thee shall all the nations be blessed.' Therefore the men of faith shall be blessed with faithful Abraham" ( Galatians 3:7-9 ).

The Jews and Muslims, having no faith in Jesus Christ as Messiah and Lord, do not inherit this blessing. The Modernists at the Vatican have denied their heritage as the true heirs of Abraham by pretending that Catholics have some kind of spiritual relationship with the Jews and the Muslims because we are all "children of Abraham." This is deceitful and scandalous, confusing Catholics, and leading the conciliar church deeper into the darkness "where there will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth" ( Blessed Apostle Saint Matthew 8:12 ).

John Paul II had met on Friday with Israel's chief rabbis,Yonah Metzger and Rishon LeTzion Shlomo Amar, who were in Rome to attend the concert. They expressed to him their desire that Catholics worldwide hold a "Day of Dialogue" with the Jews. They also suggested to the "pontiff" that he associate himself with a significant gesture to the "Year of Maimonides," the Jewish philosopher and theologian of Cordoba, Spain, who lived from 1135 to 1204 A.D. (Zenit.org, Jan.19, 2004) [Editor's note: see The Faith Betrayed!].

After the Jerusalem Temple was destroyed in the year 70 A.D., the dispersed Jews continued to practice their religion, basing it on the writings of the Talmud more than on the inspired writings of the Old Testament. Moses Maimonides, despite his reputation, was an unbeliever, and wrote lengthy commentaries on the Talmud, considering it to be divinely inspired. Woe to those who criticized the Talmud! He declared it a religious duty to send Jewish traitors to the pit of destruction, including Jesus of Nazareth and His disciples, for whom he had this expression of contempt: "May the name of the wicked rot" ( On the Mishnah Torah of Maimonides ).

"Do not bear the yoke with unbelievers," says Blessed Apostle Saint Paul. "For what has justice in common with iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what part has the believer with the unbeliever?" (2 Cor. 6: 14,15).

We are now suffering the disastrous effects of this strange fellowship with unbelievers. Jewish "agents of change" have long been at work attempting to change the results of papal conclaves, and to adulterate Catholic doctrines and practices. At Vatican II Jewish individuals and groups such as the Jewish Masonic organization, B'Nai Brith, managed to change the Catholic Church through the document Nostra Aetate, which was a collaborative effort of the Jewish caucus at the Council. This is confirmed by a famous article in Look Magazine by Joseph Roddy, entitled: How the Jews Changed Catholic Thinking ( Jan. 25, 1966, Vol. 30, No. 2).

"Dialogue," a favorite theme of Jewish philosophers like Martin Buber before it became a favorite theme of the conciliar church, implies openness and willingness to change. But the purpose of the so-called "Day of Dialogue" with the Jews, suggested by the rabbis, which no doubt will be imposed on Novus Ordo Catholics, was made clear by the Chief Rabbi of Rome, Riccardo Di Segni, speaking at a conference on Thursday, January 15. "Reciprocity at the theological level does not exist," the rabbi said. "Christianity is born from Judaism and, with notable efforts, can introduce elements of Jewish spirituality," he said. "The contrary is not possible" ( Zenit.org, Jan. 16, 2004 ). In other words, Catholics, through the "Day of Dialogue" with the Jews, can be expected to change by becoming more Jewish, but don't expect the Jews to change by so much as one iota. In fact, Christians can learn nothing from modern Judaism, the religion of the Talmud, which is no longer the same religion as that of the pious Jews who welcomed Jesus as the Messiah.

According to "Late Breaking News" John Paul II, in another gesture towards the Jews, appointed a Jewish Bishop for Jerusalem, the first since Blessed Apostle Saint James, who died a martyr by being thrown down from the Temple in 62 A.D. Bishop Jean-Baptiste Gourion, a former French Benedictine Abbot, had these words to say, according to Israel Today :

"For me, Christianity and Judaism are the same. I didn't have to leave Judaism to come to Christianity. The Jew and the Christian form the same body." Israel Today comments: "As such, he makes it clear that he will not engage in 'missionary' activities." In an interview published by Israel Today on January 20th, the new bishop states: "I think my appointment by the Catholic Church points to a new era between Jews and Catholic Christians. We have to learn to understand each other better. The Catholic Church has no intention of converting Jews to Christianity. Therefore, the Pope advocated a Jewish bishop in Israel." [Editor's Note: see The Faith Betrayed!]

Bishop Gourion makes it clear that he is only following the new policy of the conciliar church: "Forty years ago in the Second Vatican Council, the Church adopted a new theological position toward Israel as God's chosen people. The Catholic Church does not replace the Jewish people with whom God made an eternal covenant." The bishop adds: "I see myself as a Jew."

In his time Blessed Apostle Saint Paul had to confront the Judaizers, certain Jewish Christians who wanted to impose Jewish customs including circumcision on all new converts. We are facing the New Judaizers, who want to turn the Catholic Church into a servile religion, subservient to the new false Jewish religion of the Talmud. We could turn like cowards and simply walk away, but we have to stand up and fight for our holy Catholic Faith. Like Blessed Apostle Saint James, and Blessed Apostle Saint Paul, whose conversion we commemorate today, we must renounce sin and embrace the truth, preaching the Gospel of salvation in the Name of Jesus, "For there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved" ( Acts 4:12 ). What a privilege to take up our cross and follow Jesus, Whose Passion and Death we will soon contemplate as Lent begins. And what a special grace for our time will be the opportunity to view the new movie, "The Passion of The Christ."

Just now the Church is enduring her Passion, but she will soon rise gloriously, purified and holy, as the beautiful Bride of Christ, the New Jerusalem coming down out of Heaven. We can only pray, "Come, Lord Jesus!" "It is true," Jesus says, "I come quickly!" ( Apocalypse. 22:20 ). †

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

PREFACE of the Most Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, ever-lasting God: Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, are one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out with one voice saying: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY...
