The big difference is that, guided by the Holy Spirit, we have taken action to prevent this from ever occuring again. What action, if any, has been taken by the 30,000+ non-Catholic denominations, or the State Departements of Education to prevent similar occurences.
I am not Catholic; I’m a member of United Methodist, but am very supportive of the Catholic church. I get not satisfaction from the problems your church has had over the years with sexual abuse and the cover up of sexual abuse.
You ask what actions have been taken by non-Catholic denominations to deal appropriately with sexual abuse by clergy, and I can tell you the UMC has a strong “Safe Sanctuary” policy with the goal of preventing child sexual abuse. No policy will ever completely eliminate human sinfulness, but I think the UMC has done a pretty good job of removing clergy when their involvement in sexual abuse becomes known.
There is always the line we have to be careful of between a loving Christian relationship with children and an inappropriate relationship. Where my UMC has failed is in not having as strong a policy of protecting infants in the womb as we do for protecting children in our congregations.
Good point. Also I believe people are taking a firm stand, and they do support and PRAY very hard for our priests with integrity......who DO exist.
