Campaigning Among Orthodox Jewish Women: The Sarah Palin Wig

Shlomo Klein, Vice President of the venerable wig wholesaler Georgie, told the American TV network Fox News on Thursday that the human-hair "Sarah Palin" – which sells for $695 on an internet wig retail site --- is one of the company's most popular wigs.

The wig, which is listed as a "Best Seller" on a well-known retail wig vendor's website, has sold in the dozens since the Republican Convention.

Although Palin was a relative unknown before she was tapped to become the running mate of Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain, the Governor of Alaska has become a national celebrity since joining the campaign.

And although she is a devout Christian, leading a state in which there are very few Jews, Klein sees no conflict in popularizing her style among Orthodox Jewish women.

"She's pro-Israel," he notes.

The wig shop is in Borough Park in Brooklyn, an Orthodox neighborhood. I've read some local coverage of the story. Someone thought it would be a great idea, and others just liked the look. This place specializes in wigs for Orthodox women who wear them for religious reasons and women who wear wigs for medical reasons. In other words, they spend good money on something quality because it will get a lot of use.

They didn't expect the response when they offered it for sale on the Internet. But more power to them.
