Optional Memorial of St. John of Capistrano, priest
Old Calendar: St. Anthony Mary Claret #cal_links li { padding: 0px; }

John was a native of Capistrano, in Italy. He became a Franciscan and was one of the great organizers of the struggle against the Mohammedans in the 15th century, when they threatened to overrun the whole of Europe. Mohammed II had taken Constantinope and was already marching against Belgrade, when Pope Callixtus III called St. John to preach the crusade; assisted by the Hungarian John Hunyadi, he gathered a strong Christian army, which defeated the Turks in the great battle of Belgrade (1453). He died in 1456.

According to the 1962 Missal of Bl. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, St. John of Capistrano's feast is celebrated on March 28 and today is the feast of St. Anthony Mary Claret which is now observed on October 24 in the Ordinary Rite.

St. John of Capistrano
St. John was born in 1386 at Capistrano in the Italian Province of the Abruzzi. His father was a German knight and died when he was still young. St. John became a lawyer and attained the position of governor of Perugia. When war broke out between Perugia and Malatesta in 1416, St. John tried to broker a peace. Unfortunately, his opponents ignored the truce and St. John became a prisoner of war. On the death of his wife he entered the order of Friars Minor, was ordained and began to lead a very penitential life.

John became a disciple of Saint Bernadine of Siena and a noted preacher while still a deacon, beginning his work in 1420. The world at the time was in need of strong men to work for salvation of souls. Thirty percent of the population was killed by the Black Plague, the Church was split in schism and there were several men claiming to be pope. As an Itinerant priest throughout Italy, Germany, Bohemia, Austria, Hungary, Poland, and Russia, St. John preached to tens of thousands and established communities of Franciscan renewal. He reportedly healed the sick by making the Sign of the Cross over them. He also wrote extensively, mainly against the heresies of the day.

He was successful in reconciling heretics. After the fall of Constantinople, he preached a crusade against the Muslim Turks. At age 70 he was commissioned by Pope Callistus II to lead it, and marched off at the head of 70,000 Christian soldiers. He won the great battle of Belgrade in the summer of 1456. He died in the field a few months later, but his army delivered Europe from the Moslems.

Patron: chaplains; jurists; judges; military chaplains.

Symbols: man with a crucifix and lance, treading a turban underfoot; Franciscan with cross on his breast and carrying banner of the cross; Franciscan preaching, angels with rosaries and IHS above him; Franciscan pointing to a crucifix which he holds; crucifix; IHS banner; red cross; star.

Things to Do:

  • St. John struggled with finding his vocation. Younger people can pray to St. John for help in discerning God's will for their lives.

  • Learn more about the times that St. John Capistrano lived, such as the Crusades, the Black Plague, anti-popes.

  • St. John is the patron of jurists. We can turn to him to help discern major decisions. We can also follow his example of strict self-discipline in order to think more clearly.

  • In 1776 in Southern California, Father Junipera Serra founded the Mission of San Juan Capistrano, named for St. John, for mission work to the Indians. The mission is a historical site, and has both a Catholic Basilica and the original smaller chapel that are still used for Catholic liturgy. Here is a virtual tour. There is also a tradition of the swallows returning to San Juan every March 19. Find out more about this annual event.

Lauds -- Morning Prayer

Morning Prayer (Lauds)

If this is the first Hour that you are reciting today, you should precede it with the Invitatory Psalm.

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 56 (57)
Morning prayer in time of affliction
Have mercy on me, God, have mercy. My soul flies to you for refuge.
I will hide in the shelter of your wings until the time of ambush is past.
I will cry to God the Most High, to the God who cares for me.

He will send help from heaven to set me free. He will disgrace those who trample me underfoot. He will send forth his mercy and faithfulness.
My soul lies among lion-cubs that would devour the children of men. Their teeth are spears and arrows, their tongues are pointed swords.

May you be exalted above the heavens, O God; let your glory cover the whole earth.

They prepared a trap for my feet; my soul was bent double under its burden; they dug a pit in front of me – but they fell into it themselves.

My heart is ready, God. My heart is ready. I will offer you music and song.
Awake, my glory, awake, lyre and harp. I will awaken the dawn.
I will proclaim you among the peoples, Lord, and make music for you among the nations,
for your mercy reaches as high as the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds.

May you be exalted above the heavens, O God; let your glory cover the earth.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Canticle Jeremiah 31
The joy of those whom God sets free
All you nations, listen to the word of the Lord, proclaim it in the farthest islands:
“He who scattered his people Israel has brought them back together. He will care for them as a shepherd tends his flock.”

For the Lord has redeemed Jacob and freed him from the hand of his conqueror.
They will come and sing praises on Mount Sion, they will flood in to receive the good things of the Lord,
grain, and wine, and oil, and the young of both herd and flock.
Their spirit will be like a richly watered garden, and they will hunger no more.

The young girl will dance for joy, young men and old men too.
“I will turn their weeping into gladness,” says the Lord, “I will comfort them and give them joy after sorrow.
I will overwhelm my priests with rich food, and my good things will fill my people to overflowing.”

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 47 (48)
Thanksgiving for the safety of the people
The Lord is great and greatly to be praised in the city of our God.
His holy mountain is a beautiful sight, the joy of all the earth.
Mount Sion is at its northernmost edge, the city of the great king.
Here among its palaces, God has shown himself as its refuge.

For the kings assembled, made alliance against it –
but when they saw it, they were amazed. Panic took them and they scattered.
Trembling took hold of them, pain like that of childbirth.
With the east wind you will destroy the ships of Tarshish.

What we had heard, we saw in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God, which God has founded for ever.
We ponder your mercy, O God, as we stand in your temple.
Your name, O Lord, and your praise will reach to the ends of the earth. Your right hand delivers justice.
Let Mount Sion be glad and the daughters of Judah rejoice, because of your judgements.

Go round Sion, see it all, count every tower.
Feel its strength, visit its palaces, so that you can tell the next generation –
Here is God, our God, here he remains for ever; and for ever he will lead us and guide us.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Short reading Isaiah 66:1 - 2 ©
Thus says the Lord: With heaven my throne and earth my footstool, what house could you build me, what place could you make for my rest? All of this was made by my hand and all of this is mine – it is the Lord who speaks. But my eyes are drawn to the man of humbled and contrite spirit, who trembles at my word.

Canticle Benedictus
The Messiah and his forerunner
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has come to his people and brought about their redemption.
He has raised up the sign of salvation in the house of his servant David,
as he promised through the mouth of the holy ones, his prophets through the ages:
to rescue us from our enemies and all who hate us, to take pity on our fathers,
to remember his holy covenant and the oath he swore to Abraham our father,
that he would give himself to us, that we could serve him without fear – freed from the hands of our enemies –
in uprightness and holiness before him, for all of our days.

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High: for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his path,
to let his people know their salvation, so that their sins may be forgiven.
Through the bottomless mercy of our God, one born on high will visit us
to give light to those who walk in darkness, who live in the shadow of death;
to lead our feet in the path of peace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Prayers and Intercessions ?
Let us thank Christ who has given us the light of this day, and let us pray to him:
Bless us, Lord, and sanctify us.
You offered yourself up for our sins:
accept all that we are doing and plan to do today.
Our eyes rejoice at the gift of a new day:
may our hearts rejoice as you dawn in them.
Grant us the gift today of being patient with everyone,
so that we can be like you.
This morning, Lord, make us understand your compassion:
may your joy give us strength through the day.
Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.

Almighty and ever-living God, we pray to you in your majesty morning, noon and night:
erase from our hearts the shadow of sin,
and fill them with the true light, which is Christ.

He lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
 God for ever and ever.
Amen.

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.

The Word Among Us

Meditation: Ephesians 3:14-21

What an inheritance we have in Christ! In him we have every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3). With him we have been raised up and seated in the heavens (2:6). And through him, our sins have been washed away (1:7).

And even more amazing, we don’t have to wait for heaven to begin to experience it. It is ours for the taking right here and right now! We can experience Jesus dwelling in our hearts, giving us peace with God and with those around us. We can know the surpassing love of God and receive comfort and strength from his love every day.

What a beautiful picture! However, in the daily grind of our lives, facing difficulties in our families and at our jobs, or beset by our own weaknesses and sins, the thought of enjoying the Christian life may seem like a distant dream. The issues we face can so fill our thoughts that we don’t reach up to the Lord for a share in his promises. This is why Paul prayed that we would all be strengthened interiorly—so that we could grasp and comprehend the full measure of God’s gift to us right now.

Brothers and sisters, God really has given us every spiritual blessing. He really has poured his eternal, life-giving Holy Spirit into our hearts. All he wants is our willingness to change, our decision to accept what he has done for us. He asks us not to focus on our problems. He asks us to give up resentments and grudges (including bitterness toward him for any difficulties we are facing). And instead of all this, he wants us to take up faith and hope in his goodness toward us.

Holding on to your own ways of thinking is the one thing that will keep the Holy Spirit from transforming you. Don’t do it! Let his grace go to work in your heart. He stands at the door of your heart, ready for you to open up to him. So try your best to cooperate with him, for the reward is great!

“Thank you, Father, for the glorious inheritance you have given me. Transform my heart, and make my faith strong enough to grasp this blessing in its fullness. Empower me, Father, to experience every day the victorious, confident life that you have given me in Christ.”

Psalm 33:1-2,4-5,11-12,18-19;
Luke 12:49-53

Vespers -- Evening Prayer

Vespers (Evening Prayer)

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 29 (30)
Thanksgiving for rescue from death
Lord, I will give you all praise, for you have rescued me and not let my foes triumph over me.
My Lord God, I cried to you and you healed me.
Lord, you led my soul out from the underworld, gave me life so that I would not sink into the abyss.

Sing to the Lord, his holy ones, and proclaim the truth of his holiness.
His anger lasts a moment, but his favour for a lifetime.
At night there are tears, but in the morning, joy.

Once I was secure. I said, “I will never be shaken.”
Lord, by your favour you had given me strength, set me high;
but then you turned your face from me and I was shaken.
I cried to you, Lord, and prayed to my God.

“What use is my life, when I sink into decay?
Will dust proclaim you, or make known your faithfulness?”

The Lord heard and took pity on me. The Lord became my helper.

You have turned my weeping into dancing, torn off my sackcloth and clothed me in joy,
It is my glory to sing to you and never cease: Lord, my God, I will proclaim your goodness for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 31 (32)
The joy of the forgiven
Blessed is he whose sins are forgiven, whose transgressions are hidden away.
Happy the man to whom the Lord imputes no blame, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

While I kept silent, my bones grew old as I groaned all day long.
While your hand lay heavy on me, by day and by night, my strength was dried up as if by summer heat.

I made my sin known to you, and I did not hide my faults.
I said “I will bear witness against myself before the Lord,” and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

This is why every saint will pray to you in due time,
and even in the great flood he will not be touched.
You are my refuge, you will preserve me from trouble, you will surround me with cries of deliverance.

I will give you understanding and teach you the path you are to follow; I will keep watch over you.
Do not be like the horse and the mule, without understanding:
if you approach them with bit or bridle, they will not come near.

Many are the sufferings of the wicked, but the Lord’s mercy will protect those who trust in him.
Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, you just. Shout for joy, you upright of heart.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Canticle Apocalypse 11
The Judgement
We thank you, Lord God Almighty, who are and who were,
that you have taken up your great power and begun to reign.

The nations were angered, but your anger came, the time for the dead to be judged,
the time to reward the prophets and saints, your servants, and those who feared your name, both great and small.

Now have come the salvation and might and kingdom of our God, and the power of his Anointed,
for the accuser of our brethren has been brought down, who accused them day and night in the sight of God.

But they vanquished him through the blood of the Lamb and through their own witness.
They did not cling to life, even in the face of death.
Therefore rejoice, heavens, and you who dwell in them.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Short reading 1 Peter 1:6 - 9 ©
This is a cause of great joy for you, even though you may for a short time have to bear being plagued by all sorts of trials; so that, when Jesus Christ is revealed, your faith will have been tested and proved like gold – only it is more precious than gold, which is corruptible even though it bears testing by fire – and then you will have praise and glory and honour. You did not see him, yet you love him; and still without seeing him, you are already filled with a joy so glorious that it cannot be described, because you believe; and you are sure of the end to which your faith looks forward, that is, the salvation of your souls.

Canticle Magnificat
My soul rejoices in the Lord
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God, my salvation.
For he has shown me such favour –
 me, his lowly handmaiden.
Now all generations will call me blessed,
because the mighty one has done great things for me.
His name is holy,
his mercy lasts for generation after generation
 for those who revere him.

He has put forth his strength:
he has scattered the proud and conceited,
 torn princes from their thrones;
 but lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things;
the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
he has remembered his mercy as he promised to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Prayers and Intercessions ?
Let us give praise to God, our help. In him is all our hope, to him we call as we say:
Lord, look kindly on your children.
O Lord our God, you established an eternal covenant with your people:
continue to work your wonders for us.
Bring every priest to perfection in your love,
and bind together your faithful people in peace and unity.
May we work with you as we build our society,
so that our labours are not in vain.
Send workers into the harvest,
so that the whole world comes to know the glory of your name.
Welcome among your saints the dead whom we knew or who helped us;
and bring us in to join them when our time comes.
Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.

O God, you send moon and stars to illuminate the night, and when night is over you send the dawn.
Grant that we may pass through this night safely, unhindered by Satan,
and that in the morning we may give you thanks in your presence.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
 God for ever and ever.
Amen.

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.

Baptized in Christ
| SPIRITUAL LIFE | SPIRITUALITY
October 23, 2008
Thursday of the Twenty-Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

Father Alfonse Nazzaro, LC

Luke 12: 49-53
Jesus said to his disciples: "I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."

Introductory Prayer:Lord, thank you for the fire of your love and the zeal for your service that you have set in my soul. Increase that flame so that I may serve only you and spread your fire.

Petition:Lord, help me to have the courage and the faith to spread your word.

1. Set the World on Fire    Christ tells his disciples, “I have come to set the world on fire.” The fire of Christ’s love radiates both heat and light. We should pray today and ask Christ to remove all desires which are not of him, so that his holy fire may burn away those attachments which keep us far from him. We should pray that his holy fire will enlighten our path and guide our way, and that we may spread that fire so that the world may be blazing with Christ’s love.

2. Christ’s Baptism    “There is a baptism with which I must be baptized.” Christ is calling us to be a part of his greater plan for love. Jesus shows us that the kind of love he is bringing to the world is not just one of feelings and nice words. Rather it requires a self-emptying, a dying to oneself, a baptism. The baptism Christ foretells is his own redemptive suffering for us on the Cross. It is the reason for his coming among us as a human being. It is an intense kind of love, a laying down of one’s life for the sake of another. Our love will burn with the fire of Christ’s love only when we too can die to ourselves for others in our daily lives.

3. Divided Lives    Thinking that there will be such division in our lives is hard to accept. What Christ is saying here is that there are those who will believe, follow Christ’s love, and set the world on fire. Then there are those who will not believe, or who will be lukewarm. We recall in the Book of Revelation, Christ declares to the Church in Laodicea: “Because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am about to spit you out of my mouth” (Revelation 3:16). We should fear lukewarmness more than possible divisions due to our living of the truth. Though there is division, the truth will always bring hope and joy and will set us free. We should spread that truth.

Conversation with Christ: I know that you have called me to be ablaze with the fire of your love and to spread your love throughout the world. Help me to answer that call. I want everyone to know what I know about you, Lord: to know the truth and to be set free by the power of your cross.

Resolution: I will be your fire, Lord, spreading with the wind of the Holy Spirit. I will speak the truth where it needs to be spoken, and I will reveal your love to those who do not know you. Today, I will speak to someone about my faith.

Homily of the Day

Are You Growing Wiser or Just More Knowledgeable?

October 23rd, 2008 by Monsignor Dennis Clark, Ph.D.

Eph 3:14-21 / Lk 12:49-53

We live in a time of an extraordinary and truly unparalleled explosion of knowledge. Not only are we learning more about almost everything under the sun, but the means of diffusing that knowledge and making it available on every corner of the earth are expanding every day. The internet gives us access to resources previously unavailable to most human beings, and everyday the web sites and portals expand almost exponentially.

There’s no question about it, we know more stuff, but are we becoming more wise? To be wise means both to see things as they really are in the fullness of their complex dimensions AND then to act in a way that fits what we see. For us Christians that means seeing things through God’s eyes and responding as God would respond. We don’t do that a lot of the time.

Imagine what our families and our neighborhoods would be like if we did regularly see things through God’s eyes and then acted as God would act. What understanding and compassion we’d bring to everyone we met, and how beautifully the people around us would grow and thrive.

That’s the way that things could be. Why not make it happen!

Psalm 33 Luke 12:49-53

ALL IN THE FAMILY

"I kneel before the Father from Whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name; and I pray." —Ephesians 3:14-16

Today's first reading is possibly the greatest family prayer ever. It teaches us that, when we pray for our family and others, we should first of all pray for "gifts in keeping with the riches of His glory" (Eph 3:16). Family life is humanly impossible. We must admit this and then pray for supernatural gifts from God.

The demands of family life are overwhelming. The only way we will survive is by asking for and receiving inward strength "through the working of His Spirit" (Eph 3:16). We need not only divine gifts and inward strength, but we need God Himself to reside in our family (Eph 3:17). We bring this about by inviting Jesus into our hearts through faith (Eph 3:17). With God actually living in our family, love can now be the root and foundation of our family life (Eph 3:17), for God is Love (1 Jn 4:16). Because love covers a multitude of sins (1 Pt 4:8) and never fails (1 Cor 13:8), our families will be holy families, built up in love (Eph 4:16).

This may seem impossible to you, but God's "power now at work in us can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine" (Eph 3:20). So start praying the family prayer in Ephesians 3:16-17. Keep praying and obeying. Your family will be so transformed that, when you have a family reunion in heaven soon, not one family member will be missing.

Prayer: Father, may my family "grasp fully, with all the holy ones, the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ's love, and experience this love" (Eph 3:18-19).
Promise: "I have come to light a fire on the earth. How I wish the blaze were ignited!" —Lk 12:49
Praise: St. John, who faithfully promoted devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus and His mother, was so powerful in his prayers that many miracles were attributed to him.

Compline -- Night Prayer

Compline (Night Prayer)

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience. In a communal celebration of Compline, one of the penitential acts given in the Missal may be recited.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 15 (16)
The Lord, my inheritance
My body will rest in calm and hope.
Preserve me, Lord, I put my hope in you.

I have said to the Lord “You are my Lord, in you alone is all my good.”
As for the holy and noble men of the land, in them is all my delight.
But for those who run to alien gods, their sorrows are many.
I will not share in their libations of blood. I will not speak their names.

You, Lord, are my inheritance and my cup. You control my destiny,
the lot marked out for me is of the best, my inheritance is all I could ask for.
I will bless the Lord who gave me understanding; even in the night my heart will teach me wisdom.
I will hold the Lord for ever in my sight: with him at my side I can never be shaken.
Thus it is that my heart rejoices, heart and soul together; while my body rests in calm hope.

You will not leave my soul in the underworld. You will not let your chosen one see decay.
You will show me the paths of life, the fullness of joy before your face, and delights at your right hand until the end of time.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
My body will rest in calm and hope.

Reading 1 Thessalonians 5:23
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you in every way and preserve your life and your soul and your body without blemish, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Short Responsory ?
Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
You have redeemed us, Lord, God of faithfulness.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

Canticle Nunc Dimittis
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.
Now, Master, you let your servant go in peace.
 You have fulfilled your promise.
My own eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all peoples.
A light to bring the Gentiles from darkness;
the glory of your people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Prayer
Let us pray.
Lord our God, we are tired by the work of the day. Refresh us with peaceful sleep and, forever renewed by the help you give, let us always be dedicated to you in body and mind.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

May the almighty Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.
A M E N
An antiphon to Our Lady should be recited here.
