The UAW and the automoble companies enetered into a death pact. Instead of investing in technology, the companies paid workers to endure outdated factories and funneled their profits to stockholders. The Movie “Tucker” of several years ago, was highly fictionalized, but it showed that the Big Three behaved much like a protected cartel. Then along came the Germans and Japanese with cheap and Good cars. During the ‘70s, while Washington keep the price of gas artifically low, they cranked out vans that averaged five miles per gallon. Foreign manufacturer filled the gaps and gradually became competitive in all sizes of vehicle. As health costs rose more and more, UAW contracts began to eat more and more into Big Three profits, and they began to depend more and more on the sales of big cars—SUVs and pick-ups. Now comes costly gas and they have so many cars thery cannot sell.
