Saint Aelia Flaccilla
Also known as : Plakilla
Of Spanish descent. May have been the daughter of Claudius Antonius, Prefect of Gaul. Married Emperor Theodosius the Great c.376. Mother of Arcadius, roman emperor of the east, and Honorius, roman emperor of the west; a daughter, Pulcheria, died in childhood. Zealous supporter of the Nicene Creed. Considered a pillar of the Church and model of Christian virtue by Saint Gregory of Nyssa.

Saint Caerealis
Roman soldier. Married to Saint Sallustia. Convert to Christianity, instructed in the faith by Pope Saint Cornelius. Martyred in the year 251 A.D. during the persecutions of Decius.

Saint Crescentian
African martyr with Victor, Rosula, and Generalis. They are reported to have been martyred at the same time and in the same place as Saint Cyprian.

Saint Crescentius
Martyred eleven-year-old, the son of Saint Euthymius. He was brought from Perugia, Italy, to Rome to stand trial. Refusing to deny Christ, Saint Crescentius was beheaded after he was subjected to torture.

Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

- Feast of the Triumph of the Cross
The feast was celebrated in Rome before the end of the 7th century. Its purpose is to commemorate the recovering of that portion of the Holy Cross which was preserved at Jerusalem, and which had fallen into the hands of the Persians. Emperor Heraclius recovered this precious relic and brought it back to Jerusalem on 3 May 629.

Saint Gabriel John Tauin du Fresse
Entered the Society of Foreign Missions of Paris seminary in 1774. Missionary to Szechuan, China in 1775. Imprisoned for six months in 1784 during a government persecution of Christians. He was re-assigned to Macao, but return to the Chinese missions in 1788. Bishop of Tabraca in 1800. Spent the next 15 years in constant danger during the persecution of Christians and foreigners. Betrayed to the Chinese authorities by a scared native Christian. Martyr. Beheaded in 14 September 1815 at Tschantu, China. Saint Gabriels' head was attached to a pole and his body left exposed for three days as a warning to others. Local Christians were then allowed to bury him.

African martyr with Saint Victor, Saint Rosula, and Saint Crescentian. They are reported to have been martyred at the same time and in the same place as St. Cyprian.

Saint Maternus
First known bishop of Cologne, in modern Germany. He was involved in the effort against the Donatist heretics and was asked by Emperor Constantine to hear charges against the Donatists in 313. In a legend defended by Saint Peter Canisius, Saint Maternus is labeled a disciple of Saint Peter and the son of the widow of Naim, resurrected to serve the faith once more. Saint Maternus died at Trier, Germany, where it is believed he also served as a bishop at one time.

Saint Nortburga
Patroness of poor peasants and servants in the Tyrol. Born in Rattenberg, in the Tyrol, she was the daughter of peasants. At eighteen she became a servant in the household of Count Henry of Rattenberg When Saint Notburga repeatedly gave food to the poor, she was dismissed by Count Henrys wife, Ottilia, and took up a position as a servant to a humble farmer. Meanwhile, Henry suffering a run of misfortune and setbacks, wasted no time restoring Saint Notburga to her post after his wife died. Saint Notburga remained his housekeeper for the rest of her life, and was famous for her miracles and concern for the poor.
