Prayer for Hurricane Gustav

For all those who feel called to pray in one accord....

August 31, 2008 9:45pm PDT

Lord God, You are the Holy One. You are the One True God. There is no other God but You. There is no power beyond Yours and nothing which can defeat Your purposes. You are the only One with the plan and ALL things are in Your hands.

Lord God, three years ago Hurricane Katrina brought death, destruction and misery to areas which have yet to fully recover. Lord God, as Hurricane Gustav now threatens that same coast, we who are called by Your Name gather and cry out in one accord. Let the sound of our cries come to Your ears. Hear from us and pour out a response which reflects Your Love and heart for restoration, not destruction.

Lord God we cry out in adoration, in awe, in a fear of the Lord which knows no bounds. We bow before You, knowing You are our everything and our all in all. We cry out in worship, amazed at everything You are, unable to grasp the depth and breadth and wonder of all Your attributes, astonished and breathless at the mightiness of what You have already done and the promises we know You still will fulfill. We worship You as King, Lord, Lamb of God who enables our salvation both for now and eternity. We bow to You as Savior, Lord, Redeemer, Sanctifier, Dwelling Place, Refuge, High Tower and LOVE.

As a spiritual act of worship we place our trust in You instead of what the media has been predicted. We know You are greater. We know and declare Your ways are not our ways. Your ways are higher – higher than the heavens are above the earth. Your ways are better, always, always focused on drawing more people to You for eternity, always focused on what will be for good when everything is considered in light of eternity for those who serve You.

And so we worship, but we also recognize our position in You through our choice to have faith in Your Son, Jesus as Savior and Lord. Lord God, when You are our King, You tell us that we stand in Your authority. You tell us we are already seated in the heavenly places next to Your Son. Even as we are spiritually seated next to Him, Jesus is interceding on behalf of all people at Your right hand. Lord God, we join in the prayers of Your Son and we know His heart (as Yours) to be mercy. And so we worship in trust, in joy, in the peace of knowing who You are. But we also pray. Tonight we gather as Your Body across this continent and across the world to pray that You would release Your power to turn Hurricane Gustav into something which is nothing. We thank you for all the preparations and evacuations. But by Your power (for Your glory!) cause all predictions to be shown as nothing, show Your superiority, demonstrate Your mercy and love, show how You answer the prayers of those who are called by Your name and turn this storm away from the coast. Cause it to lose its power.

Even as when You, Jesus, told the storm to stop and Your disciples were amazed because even the wind and the waves obeyed You, we ask You for the same thing in our generation: cause the wind and rain from this storm to become as nothing compared to what has been forecast and cause the world to know it has been by Your power in answer to prayer that this thing has happened. Lord God, cause the world which watches and does not know You to be amazed. Dispatch Your angels into the area to protect those who might otherwise be harmed. Be the shelter to all who must experience any of whatever becomes of this storm. Write miraculous stories in the lives of people which will be told - stories which cannot deny the reality of who You are and bring others to You.

That is perfectly understandable, appreciate your good will, and skip over the part of my post that follows yours that I would never have meant to be offensive as I was composing my response and didn't see your post until after I posted.

Some Christian prayers I have mental reservations and skip over certain parts as well, but that didn't mean I was insincere about the rest of it. I once held in my hands and prayed with a Jewish prayerbook in a synogogue and felt comforted by it.

Now when they are vocalized in Hebrew, of course, I don't understand they are praying but still figure all is well.

Thanks to rabscuttle385 for the ping.

In Time of Calamity.

O GOD, merciful and compassionate, who art ever ready to hear the prayers of those who put their trust in thee; Graciously hearken to us who call upon thee, and grant us thy help in this our need; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Even here in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on the morning drive to work, the radio stations were calling for prayers for people in the path of Gustav.

I’ve probably been to church more times than most Christians I know!

Kind of an understanding chuckle there. Thank you so much for sharing that. Growing up steeped in Christian culture, even in the public schools back then but not as much as some parts of the country (I don't remember prayers in school, but think there were some at gatherings), it didn't occur to me how some of the minority Jews may have felt. Recently I apologized to my Jewish girlfriend from that time if any of it caused offense. She liked the worldly festivities, and from her I learned about Bar Mitzvah and Bas Mitzvah and some of their holiday traditions. We had so much fun together.

I'm kind of a renegade myself because I started thinking of what some of it meant to ME. I keep it to myself. Out of deference to you, I won't use the Y word; it is relatively new in Christian culture anyway and doesn't come naturally to me. The other without the hyphen is so habituated with me. I don't use it all that often, maybe here more than anywhere in writing.

I'll freepmail you my little experience. I loved your prayer on the other thread and saved it. Thank you.

Thank You, Father God,
for having blunted the force of Gustav over New Orleans.
We pray for the elderly, the sick, the poor; for diligent mothers with small children who are hurricane refugees, here and in the islands. Restore them to their homes in safety, Lord.
We pray for the complete restoration of the levees and a restoration of the fear of Your power in cities that have reveled in the flesh.
We lift up every person and dwelling and place of worship or place of necessary services and kingdom-fruitful commerce in the path of these storms, for Your divine protection, Father God.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
