I would think the historical components of your doctrine would be a relevant defense in your opinion. If you can't stand on the teachings of the writings of your church perhaps there's something wrong? Now there's a real "hmmm"

I can stand 100% on the teachings of The Bible - and guess what, it never changes. The mormon church gets continous revelation that changes with demand of the public - like when ya'll finally decided to let african americans join your church in recent decades - guess what Jesus loves every race - always has and always will. No matter how we change, He never does nor do his teachings.
