Is Anti-Catholicism Dead? (Ques. Proposed by NY Times)
NY Times City Room Blog ^ | 7/23/2008 | Sewell Chan

When Gov. Alfred E. Smith ran for president in 1928, his candidacy was derailed in large part by anti-Catholic prejudice. It has been nearly 48 years since John F. Kennedy became the first (and so far only) Roman Catholic president, but experts say that anti-Catholic sentiment — much of it originating in, or as a response to, immigrants in New York — remains an enduring force in American culture.

That was the consensus of a panel assembled at the Museum of the City of New York on Tuesday night to consider the question, “Is Anti-Catholicism Dead?

...The Rev. Richard John Neuhaus — a leading conservative intellectual, a former Lutheran pastor and the editor of the leading Catholic journal First Things — offered a surprising view on the question.

“To be a Catholic is not to be refused positions of influence in our society,” he said. “Indeed, one of the most acceptable things is to be a bad Catholic, and in the view of many people, the only good Catholic is a bad Catholic.”

...He added that anti-Catholicism was as likely to come from the left — sometimes from commentators who believe that a “threatening theological insurgency is engineered and directed by Catholics,” with evangelical Protestants merely as the movement’s “foot soldiers.”

We had around 105 each day, some couldn’t come every day and some were sick, etc. But we are a very small community (actually, the little community our church is in has the church. Period.). It was a great experience.

I don't think it has anything to do with the article, I don't think they read most of the articles anyway, the whole point is to attack.

But, the fact that they do attack just reinforces Jesus’ words about persecution. If the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic church wasn't THE CHURCH, no-one would bother.

Their attacks are just affirmation. Do you see them attacking Baptists, Assembly of God, Methodist, Presbyterian...?

Exactly! I loved it because it gave me a chance to see my son, who always comes and does what they need done. His daughter helped this year as well. She always went but this year she was too old so she helped. I was happy to see that.

But you believe in what your magesterium and church fathers say. I think that’s more dangerous than believing in scripture only. You don’t know that their interpretation is any more sound that what you believe we do. We are always seeking the truth. You don’t seem to because you think your church fathers and traditions are the truth.

At the resurrection of the dead, she and the saints will join the cloud of witnesses.

If this were my only exposure to being “Christian”, I wouldn’t.

Mary didn’t lead me to Christ. God did.

That's great!

Of course, I did not say that Mary was necessary to get to Christ. Just that everything she does leads us to Christ.

For many years, a small church I attended had just an attached outdoor one holer! Then, finally, they put in a small bathroom with toilet and sink. Sooo much nicer.

There are probably mistranslations in EVERY version of the Bible. But I don’t see anyone quoting from the Apocrypha here, not even most Catholics.

Hey, that happens on both sides of the Tiber. How many Catholics just go to church and don’t believe what you do? I’m sure many, especially younger Catholics.
