Tuesday, July 01, 2008 Canonical Good Standing 1 July, 2008 Feast of the Precious Blood
My dear friends,
I am happy to inform you that last June 18th, before Cardinal Castrillon and the members of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei in Rome, I humbly petitioned the Holy See on my own behalf and on behalf of the monastery council for our priestly suspensions to be lifted.
On June 26th I received word that the Holy See had granted our petition. All canonical censures have been lifted.

What is a “canonical censure”?
Hi Brian:
Well this entire issue goes back to the late 1980’s when the Traditionalist SSPX wanted to retain the canonical right to celebrate the Liturgy and Sacraments according to the 1962 Romal Missal. According to all accounts I have read, Pope Benedict, then Cardinal Ratzinger came up with a solution that would keep the SSPX in communion with Rome and allow them to celebrate the 1962 Roman Missal.
Abp. Lefevre illicitly ordained 4 Bishops, including Bishop Fellay and Williamsom, who are among the leaders of the SSPX today. This constituted an canonically illicit act by Abp. Lefevre. Some 1 million Traditionalist followed Abp. Lefevre into what is now the SSPX. So, the SSPX are all validly ordained Catholics and are Catholics who are not in full communion with Rome.
Last July, Pope Benedict issued the Motu Proprio which allowed for the Universal celebration of the 1962 Roman Missal (before then, Pope John Paul II had allowed for an indult for this Missal, but only if the local Bishop allowed it). Pope Benedict XVI’s Motu Proprio was a directive from him that was a mandate from Rome, thus Bishops opposed to the 1962 Roman Missal and pre-concilliar Liturgy could keep it out of their dioceses.
Thus, with the Motu Propio, the 1962 Roman Missal and Liturgy are now totally liberated and thus the Transalpine Redemptorist petitioned Rome for canonical recognition of their Community and thus Rome granted it and they are no longer under a “canonical censure” and thus are in Full Communion with Rome and the Pope.
Sorry for the long post and hope this helps.
Thanks for that explanation. I’m not a Catholic, but it was interesting to read.
